The 14th Dalai Lama, the supreme spiritual leader of Tibet, was presented with his first Peace Prize by the Gandhi Mandela Foundation in Dharamsala. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar presented the honor to the Tibetan religious leader. The Dalai Lama thanked the Foundation for the award and extended his best wishes. The religious leader was selected in 2020. But the award could not be given due to the Covid pandemic. Now that the situation was normal, the award was presented to the Dalai Lama by the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.The Governor said that after Gandhi and Mandela, if there is any ambassador of peace in the whole world, then he is the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama. It is a matter of pride for me to honor and be in the company of the Dalai Lama.Foundation General Secretary Nandan Jha said that we have formed the world's largest jury under the chairmanship of former Chief Justice of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. After receiving more than 500 nominations from across the world including former Prime Ministers and Presidents, Dalai Lama was finally selected in the year 2020 and is the winner of Gandhi Mandela Award 2019.

Born Lhamo Dondrub, he was officially recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama on 17 November 1950 when he was just 15. His Holiness was taken to Lhasa's Potala Palace in 1940 where he began his monastic education as well as training. By 1950, when Tibet was under the influence of Chinese military, His Holiness was 16 and was called upon to be the head of state of the Tibetan people.
In 1959, during the Tibetan uprising, the Dalai Lama fled to India along with his small escort and resided in Dharamshala later on. He met with the then Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, who agreed to provide shelter to the Tibetan refugees. According to official records, only about 60 Gyatso monks had fled along with Dalai Lama to India. Today, the monastic community of India is known to have grown to a population of about 500 monks.

Tibetan spiritual Guru the Dalai Lama on Friday took part in the Global Buddhist Conference and addressed Buddhist monks and other dignitaries gathered for the two-day event here. The Dalai Lama emphasized on Buddhist philosophy and values in his address of about half an hour. The first-of-its-kind conference began on Thursday with PM Narendra Modi addressing the inaugural session. In his nearly half-an-hour address, the Tibetan spiritual Guru spoke on compassion, wisdom and meditation. He said that these three values are an integral part of Lord Buddha's teachings and his philosophy. The International Buddhist Confederation in association with the Union Ministry of Culture is hosting the convention from April 20 to 21 at the Ashoka Hotel.
