Born Lhamo Dondrub, he was officially recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama on 17 November 1950 when he was just 15. His Holiness was taken to Lhasa's Potala Palace in 1940 where he began his monastic education as well as training. By 1950, when Tibet was under the influence of Chinese military, His Holiness was 16 and was called upon to be the head of state of the Tibetan people.
In 1959, during the Tibetan uprising, the Dalai Lama fled to India along with his small escort and resided in Dharamshala later on. He met with the then Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, who agreed to provide shelter to the Tibetan refugees. According to official records, only about 60 Gyatso monks had fled along with Dalai Lama to India. Today, the monastic community of India is known to have grown to a population of about 500 monks.

New Delhi/ McLeodganj : The 86th birthday of the Tibetan spiritual guru Dalai Lama was reduced to a brief celebration for the second time today. The Kashag has issued an advisory for the most-awaited Trungkar celebration, the 86th birthday of the Dalai Lama on 6th July, amid the Covid-19 pandemic. In accordance with the Himachal Pradesh government issued guidelines and SOPs for social gatherings with restriction upto 50 people, Kashag Secretariat directed all monasteries and settlements to avoid congregation of public and instead, mark the day as per traditions: offering of the mandala and white scarves to the portrait of the Dalai Lama.
नई दिल्ली/ मैक्लोडगंज। तिब्बतियों के धर्मगुरु दलाई लामा का आज 86वां जन्मदिन है। कोरोना काल के चलते आज किसी भी प्रकार के भव्य समारोहों का आयोजन नहीं किया गया। दिल्ली के मजनू का टिल्ला में दलाई लामा के जन्मदिन पर टीसीवी डे स्कूल में एक प्रार्थना सभा का आयोजन किया गया। इसमें निर्वासित तिब्बती सरकार की पूर्व होम मिनिस्टर गैरी डोलमा व पूर्व डिप्टी स्पीकर यशी फुंस्तोक,सैटलमेंट आॅफिसर फुंस्तोक टोवग्याल सहित कुल 50 लोग मौजूद रहे। इसी तरह दलाई लामा के जन्मदिन पर धर्मशाला के सिक्यांग हॉल, गंगचेन किशोंग में एक आधिकारिक समारोह आयोजित किया गया। दलाई लामा का जन्मदिन कैलेंडर वर्ष में तिब्बतियों और उनके दूसरे अनुयायियों के लिए सबसे खास दिनों में से एक है। यह तिब्बतियों के लिए एक आधिकारिक अवकाश का दिन होता है और वे दुनिया भर में ग्रैंड सेलिब्रेशन का आयोजन करते हैं। लेकिन इस बार भी बीते वर्ष की तरह कोरोना काल के चलते दलाई लामा का जन्मदिन उनके अनुयायियों के लिए एक अलग अनुभव रहा। खैर इस सबके बीच दुनियाभर में आज दलाई लामा के अनुयायियों ने उनका जन्मदिन अपने-अपने तरीके से मनाया।

President Barack Obama held low-key talks with the Dalai Lama on Friday, prompting the Chinese government to ask why the White House ignored Beijing's warnings that the meeting with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader would damage ties.
China's vice foreign minister, Zhang Yesui, summoned Daniel Kritenbrink, charge d'affaires of the U.S. embassy in China, on Friday night to condemn the meeting as interference in China's internal affairs, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
China calls the Dalai Lama, who fled to India after a failed uprising in 1959, a 'wolf in sheep's clothing' who seeks to use violent methods to establish an independent Tibet. The Dalai Lama says he only wants genuine autonomy for Tibet and denies advocating violence.
Obama's private meeting with the Dalai Lama, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, lasted for about an hour. Obama reaffirmed his support for Tibet's unique religious, cultural and linguistic traditions and human rights for Tibetans, the White House said.
Obama said he did not support Tibetan independence from China and the Dalai Lama said he was not seeking it, the White House said in a statement.
The White House sidestepped questions about whether it was worried about the reaction from China.
