The ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) didn’t go as per expectations for Mumbai Indians (MI). The team lost a bit of steam in the UAE leg of the IPL and ended up on the fifth slot in the points table with 14 points. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) too had secured 14 points but by virtue of a better net run rate, the team qualified for the playoffs. MI have dominated the league by winning five editions of IPL in the 13 years that have gone by.
MI’s biggest strength and success over the years has been built on maintaining the core of the squad. Things though could change during the mega auctions of the IPL in 2022 with new teams also coming. The official news is still not clear as to how many players a franchise can retain.
Cricketer-turned-expert Virender Sehwag believes MI should retain skipper Rohit Sharma, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, and pacer Jasprit Bumrah. “I think I would retain Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah. Ishan seems to be in it for the long haul, age is on his side so he can serve you better. If Hardik Pandya doesn’t bowl, I don’t think he would be able to fetch a big money at the auction because due to his injury concerns, everyone would think twice,” Sehwag said according to News 18.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s pacer Umran Malik turned many heads with his outstanding bowling performances in the UAE leg of the IPL. The speedster is considered the pick of IPL 2021 owing to his exceptional bowling display. However, Malik has now been asked by BCCI to stay back in the UAE as India’s net bowler for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021.

Mumbai Indians have made a dismal start to their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 campaign, losing their first three games of the season. One of the only two bowlers to take two five-fers in IPL history, Unadkat has been warming the benches so far and Sehwag reckons the left-arm pacer’s experience should be utilized. “Until last year, MI had someone like a Nathan Coulter-Nile, who would play if a pacer wasn’t performing well or was injured. If you look at MI’s bench strength now, it’s like the management will think twice to include those sitting out of the XI,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
“The likes of Mayank Markande, Jaydev Unadkat, Riley Meredith, and Arshad Khan are sitting out. Besides, even guys such as Sanjay Yadav, Arjun Tendulkar, Hrithik Shokeen, and others aren’t the type of names who can replace Basil Thampi or Daniel Sams,” he added.

Notably, Unadkat has taken 85 wickets in 86 IPL matches but his economy rate of 8.74 is on the higher side. From getting the new ball to swing to delivering slower deliveries in the slog overs, the 30-year-old has many weapons in his armoury. However, his tendency to get wayward has restricted him from performing consistently.
