'The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification.'
Milan, the couple's first child, weighed 6 pounds and 6 ounces at birth, the hospital confirmed, adding that both the mother and child are 'in excellent health.'
In the statement, Shakira also joked that, 'Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth.'

The baby weighed in at almost three kilograms (6.6 pounds) and both Shakira and Milan 'are in excellent health', the singer and the football star said in their statement.
In Bogota, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos sent his congratulations to the couple 'on behalf of Colombia and my family' via Twitter.
Pique irked much the world's media late last month by announcing his girlfriend had given birth -- but then revealing it was a prank.
The announcement had also been made on Twitter. 'Our boy has already been born! We are very happy! Thank you all for your messages!' he said.
But the message came on the 'Day of the Innocents' when people in Spain play practical jokes on each other.
Later Pique seemed to be letting fans know it was a joke in a second message: 'He already has a name! He is called Innocent! Happy Day of the Innocents to all!'

The pop star gave birth at 9.36 p.m. to a boy weighing almost 3 kg and both the mother and child are 'in perfect health', the communique stated.
Shakira was admitted to the private Teknon clinic at 6.30 p.m. accompanied by her boyfriend, F.C. Barcelona soccer star Gerard Pique.
In the communique, the couple and the family said: 'We are happy to announce the birth of Milan Pique Mebarak, son of Shakira Mebarak and Gerard Pique ... Since early Tuesday morning, numerous reporters and photographers had remained on alert outside the clinic, given recent rumours that this would be the day the child would be born.
On Tuesday morning, before the birth, Shakira had tweeted, 'I'd like to ask you all to accompany me in your prayers on this very important day of my life.'
The baby was delivered by previously-scheduled Caesarean by a medical team headed by Dr. Carlota Garcia-Valdecasa.

Here's a shocking story. A 10-year-old girl in Colombia has given birth via caesarian section, making her one of the youngest mothers in the world.
Although the girl is now safe and recovering, this case underscores the dangers of pregnancy before maturity, according to doctors.
'No 10-year-old anywhere in the world should be having a baby,' Lewis Wall, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, told LiveScience.
According to Good Morning America, the 10-year-old girl, a member of the Wayuu tribe in Manaure, Colombia, delivered a healthy, 5-pound baby girl. The age of the father unknown and police in Colombia can't press charges as the tribe is under its own jurisdiction.
The risks of such a terrifying ordeal are mental, Wall said.
'Any 10-year-old who is pregnant has already been abused significantly by somebody,' he said. 'That probably should go without saying.'
There are plenty of physical risks too.
'The placenta preferentially will take nutrition from the mother, who really is a child,' said Sherry Thomas, an OB/GYN at Mission Community Hospital in Panorama City, California. That means that the fetus will take calcium and other nutrients from a child, who should still be gro
