റോയിട്ടേഴ്സ് നടത്തിയ അന്വേഷണത്തിലാണ് ഇക്കാര്യം വ്യക്തമായത്. 1971 മുതല് 2000 വരെയുള്ള കമ്പനിയുടെ രഹസ്യരേഖകളും പഠന റിപ്പോര്ട്ടുകളും പരിശോധന ഫലങ്ങളും തെളിവുകളുമാണ് റോയിട്ടേഴ്സ് പരിശോധിച്ചു. കമ്പനി പുറത്തിറക്കുന്ന ടാല്ക്ക്, ഫിനിഷ്ഡ് പൗഡറുകളില് ആസ്ബസ്റ്റോസ് ചെറിയ തോതില് അടങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് നേരത്തെ തന്നെകണ്ടെത്തിയിരുന്നുവെന്നും എന്നാല് ഇതു രഹസ്യമാക്കിയെന്നും റിപ്പോര്ട്ട് വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു. കമ്പനിക്കെതിരെയുള്ള പരിശോധന ഫലങ്ങള് തിരുത്തി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചതായും കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കമ്പനിക്ക് അനുകൂലമായ പഠനങ്ങള് നടത്താനും റിപ്പോര്ട്ടുകളെഴുതാനും പണം മുടക്കിയതായും റോയിട്ടേഴ്സ് ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടുന്നു.
കോസ്മറ്റിക് ടാല്ക്ക് ഉല്പ്പന്നങ്ങളിലെ ആസ്ബസ്റ്റോസിന്റെ തോതിന് പരിധി നിശ്ചയിക്കുന്നതിന് യുഎസ് ഏജന്സികളെ വിജയകരമായി സ്വാധീനിക്കാന് കമ്പനിക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞതായും റോയിട്ടേഴ്സിനു ലഭിച്ച രേഖകള് വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു.
1972നും 1975നും ഇടയില് മൂന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്ത ലാബുകളില് നടത്തിയ പരിശോധനയില് ബേബി പൗഡറില് ആസ്ബസ്റ്റോസ് അടങ്ങിയതായി തെളിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.
എന്നാല് 1972 ഡിസംബറിനും 1973 ഒക്ടോബറിനു ഇടയില് ഉല്പ്പാദിപ്പിച്ച ബേബ് പൗഡറിന്റെ ഒരു സാമ്പിളിലും ആസ്ബസ്റ്റോസ് കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടില്ലെന്നാണ് യുഎസ് ഫുഡ് ആന്റ് ഡ്രഗ് അഡ്മിനിസ്ട്രേഷന് കമ്പനി ഉറപ്പു നല്കിയത്. ഏത് അളവില് ശരീരത്തിലെത്തിയാലും മാരക പ്രത്യാഘാതമുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന രാസവസ്തുവാണ് ആസ്ബസ്റ്റോസ്. കമ്പനി ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരും മാനേജര്മാരും ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരും ഡോക്ടര്മാരും അഭിഭാഷകരും ഇതറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നെങ്കിലും പൊതുജനങ്ങളില്നിന്നും സര്ക്കാര് നിയന്ത്രണ ഏജന്സികളില്നിന്നും ഇതു മറച്ചു വച്ചു
