Agriculture both contributes to climate change and is affected by climate change. The increasing temperatures are resulting in reduction of yields in key crops while encouraging weed and pest proliferation. Further changes in rainfall patterns are increasing the likelihood of short-run crop failures and long-run production declines. With the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) forecasting a temperature rise of 2.5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit over the next century the challenge is severe.
To meet the demands of a growing population (approximately 9+ billion by 2050), the global food production must increase by 60% to 70% in the next three decades. This is a great challenge not only because of the volume of food that must be produced, but because agricultural conditions & resources will not remain constant or predicable in the years to come.
Like the emerging global scenario, Agriculture sector in India is also increasingly vulnerable to climate change. The challenge is huge for India as the productivity in key crops in India is low, further the pressure on water resources is high given the water intensive cropping pattern.
To mitigate climate risk the agriculture sectors must scale adoption of technologies that help improve yields and to achieve production with right food quality with minimal use of resources. Action on climate change is closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 1, SDG 2, and SDG 13, SDG 14 and SDG 15.
Given the above background, the well curated conference will provide a platform to deep dive into global advancements on technology by providing an opportunity to listen to global solution providers about their technology and explore opportunities for their adoption with respect to Climate Change in India.
