Chris Culliver, 49ers Cornerback, Says Gay Players Not Welcome On NFL Team

A player for the Super Bowl-bound San Francisco 49ers gave a controversial, anti-gay interview just days ahead of the NFL's championship game.

Speaking with shock jock Artie Lange, cornerback Chris Culliver said he's not OK with gay players in the NFL or on his team.

'I don't do the gay guys man,' Culliver said, according to Yahoo. 'I don't do that. No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.'

Culliver went on to say that gays would not be welcomed in the locker room, but if they remained closeted, he might be all right with them playing.

'Yeah, come out 10 years later,' he said.

'How progressive!,' Deadspin's Tom Ley quipped, noting that the 'interview came to a hurried conclusion at that point.'

The question of whether or not gay players would be accepted in professional sports has been in the news lately, as some media professionals speculated whether or not Notre Dame player Manti Te'o's fake girlfriend was a cover for his sexuality.
Te'o has since turned down the gay rumors, but the scandal re-opened the conversation about sexual orientation in the National Football League.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis said it's likely he played with gay players during his career, although none of them were fully .

49ers Chris Culliver Apologizes For Anti Gay Remarks' Gay Players Not Welcome On NFL Team'

San Francisco 49er Chris Culliver selfishly shot off his mouth yesterday, igniting a firestorm of controversy and creating a nightmare for his team and the National Football League as they head to the Super Bowl. For that alone the NFL should suspend him, his comments having put his entire team at the center of an unnecessary controversy as they're trying to focus on the game.

But for the horrendously bigoted, anti-gay content of his remarks, there is no question that Culliver must be suspended if the NFL is serious about its claims to be taking on homophobia in its ranks. Thanks to players like Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendan Ayanbadejo and their pro-gay advocacy, we're seeing a shift among NFL players, but the leadership needs to take strong stand against Culliver's kind of bigotry if that shift is to continue.

'I don't do the gay guys, man,' Culliver told radio host Artie Lange. 'I don't do that. No.'

Asked whether there are any gay players on the 49ers, Culliver said, 'Nah. We don't got no gay people on the team. You know, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff.'

Incredulous, Lange pointed out that gay players might be able to play well, too, but Culliver responded, 'Nah. Nah. Can't be... can't... uh... be in the locker room.'

After comments he made to Artie Lange about how no 49ers are gay and he wouldn't want a gay person in the locker room were made public the day before, San Francisco 49ers CB Chris Culliver was the center of attention at the 49ers media session three days before Super Bowl XLVII.

Chris Culliver's remarks, Manti Te'o episode make it hard for active gay athlete to go public

Just hours after San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver was surrounded by microphones and forced into an apology for anti-gay remarks, Ronnaiah Tuiasosopo was on television acknowledging he was gay. He spoke of his desire to have a relationship with what he says was an unwitting Manti Te'o, driving him to impersonate a female online and over the phone.
Te'o maintains he is 'far from' gay, a question no less than Katie Couric asked him. His answer is worth accepting if only because it's not anyone's business who someone chooses to love.
The real issue is even if Te'o, or another athlete, were homosexual, how in the world would they summon the fortitude and accept the risk to come out while seeking a professional life in an NFL locker room? Clearly, at least in some number, locker rooms are still populated by bigots who agree with Culliver.
'It's going to take a very courageous person,' said Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brandon Ayanbadejo, who is straight but a very public supporter of gay rights.
Culliver told the Artie Lange Show on Tuesday that San Francisco 'ain't got no gay people on the team. They gotta get up outta here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff.'

49ers gay ad: Anti-gay bullying video pulled

A 49ers gay ad has been pulled after two team members deny participating in it. On Feb. 1, Yahoo! Sports reported that the 'It Gets Better' video that was made as part of an anti-bullying campaign is no longer online.

'Movement co-founder Dan Savage made the decision to pull the video after linebacker Ahmad Brooks and tackle Isaac Sopoaga strangely denied their involvement with 'It Gets Better' when asked about it by Kevin Manahan of USA Today on Thursday afternoon. After being shown the video, the players then claimed ignorance of the ad's intentions and refused comment,' Yahoo! Sports reported.

The 49ers gay ad marked the first time that an NFL team filmed such a spot. It is unknown why 'It Gets Better' decided to pull the video, which seemed like it would do more good than not, regardless of Brooks and Sopoaga's comments. Many are surprised that the guys were even asked about the ad, given the fact that they have to play football this weekend. That doesn't make what they said right -- or wrong.
Naturally, the timing of this story is suspicious, given the fact that the 49ers will play in Sunday's Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens.

The 49ers gay ad was 'designed to encourage hope and acceptance among gay teens who are being bullied.'

Chris Kluwe Explains Gay Marriage To The Politician Who Is Offended By An NFL Player Supporting It

I find it inconceivable that you are an elected official of Maryland's state government. Your vitriolic hatred and bigotry make me ashamed and disgusted to think that you are in any way responsible for shaping policy at any level. The views you espouse neglect to consider several fundamental key points, which I will outline in great detail (you may want to hire an intern to help you with the longer words):

    1. As I suspect you have not read the Constitution, I would like to remind you that the very first, the VERY FIRST Amendment in this founding document deals with the freedom of speech, particularly the abridgment of said freedom. By using your position as an elected official (when referring to your constituents so as to implicitly threaten the Ravens organization) to state that the Ravens should 'inhibit such expressions from your employees,' more specifically Brendon Ayanbadejo, not only are you clearly violating the First Amendment, you also come across as a narcissistic fromunda stain. What on earth would possess you to be so mind-boggingly stupid? It baffles me that a man such as yourself, a man who relies on that same First Amendment to pursue your own religious studies without fear of persecution from the state, could somehow justify stifling another person's right to speech. To call that hypocritical would be to do a disservice to the word. Mindfucking obscenely hypocritical starts to approach it a little bit.

Chris Kluwe: NFL Punter's Hilarious, Scathing, Profanity-laced Letter in Defense of Gay Marriage

Baltimore Raven's linebacker Brandon Ayanbadejo recently caught the ire of State Rep Emmett C. Burns, Jr for having the temerity to speak out in favor of Maryland's ballot initiative for marriage equality. Rep. Burns even wrote a letter to his boss, the team owner Steve Bisciotti requesting that, and I quote, 'I am requesting that you take the necessary action ... to inhibit such expressions from your employee.'

Minnesota punter Chris Kluwe heard about this and wrote his own hilarious, profanity-filled letter back to Mr Burns in response. The complete letter (via Deadspin) is below the fold, but here is a snippet:
I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won't come into your house and steal your children. They won't magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster. They won't even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights as the other 90 percent of our population—rights like Social Security benefits, child care tax credits, Family and Medical Leave to take care of loved ones, and COBRA healthcare for spouses and children. You know what having these rights will make gays? Full-fledged American citizens just like everyone else, with the freedom to pursue happiness and all that entails. Do the civil-rights struggles of the past 200 years mean absolutely nothing to you?
