A powerful blast rocked the Russian region of the Urals early on Friday with bright objects, identified as possible meteorites, falling from the sky, emergency officials said.
'It was definitely not a plane,' an emergency official told Reuters, without elaborating. 'We are gathering the bits of information and have no data on the casualties so far.'
No one was hurt in a meteor shower, an emergency official told RIA-Novosti. Local residents said they witnessed burning objects in the sky of the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions.
A Reuters witness in Chelyabinsk reported hearing a huge blast early in the morning and feeling a shockwave in a 19-storey building in the town center.
The sounds of car alarms and breaking windows could be heard in the area, the witness said, and mobile phones were working intermittently.
'Preliminary indications are that it was a meteorite rain,' an emergency official told RIA-Novosti. 'We have information about a blast at 10,000-meter (32,800-foot) altitude. It is being verified.'
The trace from a falling object could be seen in Yekaterinburg, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of Chelyabinsk, another Reuters witness said..

A meteor streaked across the sky above Russia's Ural Mountains on Friday morning, causing sharp explosions and injuring more than 400 people, many of them hurt by broken glass.
'There was panic. People had no idea what was happening. Everyone was going around to people's houses to check if they were OK,' said Sergey Hametov, a resident of Chelyabinsk, about 930 miles east of Moscow, the biggest city in the affected region.
'We saw a big burst of light then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud thundering sound,' he told The Associated Press by telephone.
Another Chelyabinsk resident, Valya Kazakov, said some elderly women in his neighborhood started crying out that the world was ending.
Some meteorites -- fragments of the meteor -- fell in a reservoir outside the town of Cherbakul, the regional governor's office said, according to the ITAR-Tass news agency. It was not immediately clear if any people were struck by fragments.
Meteors typically cause sizeable sonic booms when they enter the atmosphere because they are traveling much faster than the speed of sound. Injuries on the scale reported Friday, however, are extraordinarily rare.
Interior Ministry spokesman Vadim Kolesnikov said more than 400 people had sought medical treatment after the blasts, and at least three had been hospitalized in serious condition. Many of the injuries

Breaking News: Meteorite crashes in Russia's urals - Video includes raw, unedited footage caught on mobile camera and multiple dashboard cameras from the meteor explosion and meteor shower.
MOSCOW - The Russian Urals region has been stricken by a sudden cosmic attack. Unidentified flying objects exploded over several major cities, including Chelyabinsk, where the blast waves blew out windows and disrupted mobile connections.
The Emergency Ministry said the incident was caused by a shower of meteorite debris. Russian space agency Roskosmos has confirmed the object is a meteorite. The meteor weighed around 10 tons before entering Earth's atmosphere and was travelling around 30 km/s when it exploded between 30 and 50 km over the Ural mountains. The shockwave broke windows and sent debris and fragments which were responsible for the widespread injuries and damage, including the hole in the ice of a lake.
Multiple dashboard videos recorded the meteorite on tape, showing huge fireballs flying over buildings and exploding with a strong blast (VIDEO).

According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers, local newspaper Znak reports quoting a source in the military.
Regnum news agency quoted a military source who claimed that the vapor condensation trail of the meteorite speaks to the fact that the meteorite was intercepted by air defenses.
Army units found three meteorite debris impact sites, two of which are in an area near Chebarkul Lake, west of Chelyabinsk. The third site was found some 80 kilometers further to the northwest, near the town of Zlatoust. One of the fragments that struck near Chebarkul left a crater six meters in diameter.
Russian space agency Roskosmos has confirmed the object that crashed in the Chelyabinsk region is a meteorite: 'According to preliminary estimates, this space object is of non-technogenic origin and qualifies as a meteorite. It was moving at a low trajectory with a speed of about 30 km/s.'
According to estimates by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the space object weighed about 10 tons before entering Earth's atmosphere.
