Leverage cyber resilience into IT security

Security is moving higher on the agendas of boards of directors. At a time when most budgets are shrinking, worldwide security spending is expected to grow 8.1% annually and hit $174.7 billion by 2024, according to IDC. There's a good reason for this. Major data breaches and crippling ransomware attacks can rise to the level of natural disasters — often bringing business to a standstill and damaging the brand, customer loyalty, partner relationships and more. It’s startling, but the projected cost of cybercrime — an estimated $6 trillion in 2021 — represents “the greatest transfer of economic wealth in history,” according to Cybersecurity Ventures. It is time to leverage cyber resilience into your IT security, operations and culture. Whether you need help migrating to the cloud, protecting data with a Zero Trust strategy or managing your security operations center, it is time for the tech companies to handle security so you can focus on your business. Much of today’s security isn’t built to face modern challenges. It’s too slow, and reactive to threats rather than proactive. Threats grow more complex every day, and existing cybersecurity offerings struggle to keep up. There’s a steady stream of new malware created every single day.

There is a dramatic surge in ransomware attacks that has targeted critical national infrastructure. Protecting the organization and users against advanced targeted threats such as malware, phishing, and data exfiltration becomes exponentially more difficult. Check Point Research (CPR) warns of potential ransomware attacks, as it sees samples of Emotet fast-spreading via Trickbot. Emotet is a strong indicator of future ransomware attacks, as the malware provides ransomware gangs with a backdoor into compromised machines. CPR spotted more than 140,000 victims affected by Trickbot all around the globe since the botnet take.

    Development of MaaS models

Multiple cybercriminal groups are leveraging a malware-as-a-service (MaaS) solution to distribute a wide range of malicious software distribution campaigns that result in the deployment of payloads. Like the organizations that they target, threat actors are also continuously working to identify new revenue streams. In recent years, we have seen the development of malware-as-a-service (MaaS) models. These are malware packs that can be bought off-the-shelf on the dark web, just like normal IT software is purchased. MaaS wouldn’t exist if it weren’t profitable: Threat actors always chase the money. It’s widely accepted that cybercriminals mainly turn a profit with ransomware when it’s used in targeted attacks, whether they be on government agencies, critical infrastructure, or large enterprises. It is, therefore, possible to infer that confidence in the potential success of ransomware attacks is increasing. This is a testament to the sophistication of both the malware itself and the exploit tactics used by the threat actors.

Dubbed 'Prometheus' and available for sale on underground platforms for $250 a month since August 2020, the service is a Traffic Direction System (TDS) that's designed to distribute malware-laced Word and Excel documents, and divert users to phishing and malicious sites, according to a Group-IB report. More than 3,000 email addresses are said to have been singled out via malicious campaigns in which Prometheus TDS was used to send malicious emails, with banking and finance, retail, energy and mining, cybersecurity, healthcare, IT, and insurance emerging the prominent verticals targeted by the attacks. It also requires multi-factor risk prioritization that supplements scanning data with third-party data such as EDR, CMBD, network connectivity, OT security, threat intelligence, and more. A New Report Details Wiper Malware Aimed at Ukraine and Upsurge in Cyber Threats from Likely Russian-backed Actor in the Fourth Quarter of 2021. It successfully targets high-ranking political leaders and executives. The fourth quarter of 2021 saw the world shift out of a two-year pandemic during which bad actors leveraged work from anywhere opportunities and Log4Shell was an unwanted holiday guest. During the first quarter of 2022, the focus on threats shifted to campaigns weaponizing cyberthreats against Ukrainian infrastructure in the Eurasia region conflict. The key findings from the report include individual consumers being the No. 1 target of cybercriminals, closely followed by the healthcare vertical. Additionally, the transportation, shipping, manufacturing and information technology industries showed a sharp increase in threats. There are critical junctures in cybersecurity and observing increasingly hostile behaviour across an ever-expanding attack surface, says an Expert. Our world has fundamentally changed. The fourth quarter signalled the shift out of a two-year pandemic which cybercriminals used for profit and saw the Log4Shell vulnerability impact hundreds of millions of devices, only to continue cyber momentum in the new year where we’ve seen an escalation of international cyber activity.

Trellix Threat Labs has been investigating wiper malware and other cyberthreats targeting Ukraine. Wipers render devices within targeted organizations useless by destroying the memory critical to how the devices operate. Trellix analysis of the Whispergate and Hermetic Wiper Malware used before and during the invasion of Ukraine details the similarities and differences of the two strains used to de-stabilize Ukrainian IT systems by destroying the communications within the country. Trellix observed the continued use of Living off the Land (LotL) methods, where criminals use existing software and controls native to a device to execute an attack. Windows Comma

About 90% of firms experienced cyberattacks is consistent with recent research and reports. As per the survey by Splunk Inc., a staggering 90% of organizations experienced at least one disruptive cyberattack in the past year. This highlights the pervasiveness of cyber threats and the vulnerability of businesses across various industries.

The survey by Splunk Inc. revealed that 83% of organizations that experienced a ransomware attack opted to pay the attackers, with over half of them shelling out a minimum of $100,000. This indicates the significant financial impact of cyberattacks and the pressure companies face to regain access to their data and systems.

The most vulnerable sectors to cyberattacks include financial services (59%), retail (59%), and healthcare (52%). These industries handle sensitive data and are often targeted by cybercriminals seeking financial gain or disruption.

The need of Next-gen SOC to Mitigate Cyberattacks

Technology has become a vital organ to run a business. The impact of cyber adversaries has grown beyond proportion and ensuring continuous protection has become a daunting task. Hackers are quickly evolving and following sophisticated trends to become more prolific. Cyberattacks are worsening and speaking in volumes. To stay ahead of these threats, businesses need to invest in SOC services. Today’s information and technology infrastructure is ridden with complexity, and organizations are mostly unable to monitor threats, prevent attacks, or scale and change as threats are growing in intensity with little or no prior intimation. Therefore, without the right technology, people, and threat intelligence, it is seemingly impossible to cope. Besides, traditional SOC faces a delay in incident reaction time, which allows attackers to dwell for a longer period thus becoming successful in attacks. There is a growing problem of rising cyberthreats and the increased number of security incidents has been to hire more people in the SOC and ingest more threat intelligence feeds. This approach actually slows down the response to new threats and has become significantly less effective in today’s growing threat landscape. Security operations centres streamline the security incident handling process, and are used to triage and resolve security incidents efficiently and effectively. The concept of the SOC was invented to enable ease of collaboration among security personnel in a time when cyberattacks were primarily manual in nature. Nowadays, machine-based, automated cyberattacks are the norm and are challenging the SOC models that worked years ago. All SOCs are tasked to identify, investigate and mitigate threats within an organization. A next-generation SOC is where information systems in the data centre, endpoint and cloud are monitored, assessed and defended against cyberattacks following a methodology that utilizes security enforcement points and threat research tools that integr

    Evolution than Revolution of cyberattacks

The first quarter of 2022 in #cybersecurity was more about evolution than revolution. The techniques and prevalence of #ransomwareattacks advanced while Russian cyberattacks continued a slow-building evolution fed by the continuing conflict in Ukraine.

The Trellix Threat Report states that the Russian cybercriminal groups have always been active. Their tactics, techniques, and procedures have not significantly evolved over time, although some changes have been observed. Lately, the threat landscape has changed, as multiple domains have partially merged. This trend was already on-going, but the increased digital activity further accelerated and exposed said trend.

IDC forecasts that worldwide cyber security spending will reach $174.7 billion in 2024, with security services the largest and fastest-growing market segment. The rise in cyberattacks, especially ransomware, has fuelled the cyber insurance market. Going forward, Employment of cyber security or information security analysts is projected to grow 31% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Critical infrastructure continues to represent one of the most enticing targets for criminals, worldwide, that exists in cyber warfare. This industry is plagued by legacy systems and riddled with trivial hardware and software flaws, configuration issues, and exceptionally sluggish update cycles. Yet, behind this façade, are many of the most essential systems we rely on, from fuel pipelines to water treatment, energy grids to building automation, defense systems and much more.

One often-overlooked area of industrial control systems is access control, part of the building automation framework. Access control systems are commonplace, de facto solutions which provide automation and remote management for card readers and entry/exit points to secure locations.

Kids today are digitally wired and interconnected. #Smartphones, video games, consoles, smart TVs, and laptops are part of a staple diet in the daily life of the kid. The number of smartphone-carrying kids is drastically increasing. Computers are a basic necessity at school and homes for projects, research or more. They frequently download apps and play online games. Social networks target them for business purposes.

A Sophos report says, among Infrastructure as a Service users, 56% experienced an increase in the volume of attacks on their organization when compared to the previous year, and 67% were hit by #ransomware. In addition, 59% experienced an increase in complexity of attacks.

For many of these users, a lack of visibility into their infrastructure, unpatched vulnerabilities and resource misconfigurations make them susceptible to various types of attacks, including ransomware. Of those surveyed, only 37% track and detect resource misconfigurations and only 43% routinely scan IaaS resources for software vulnerabilities.

65% of cloud users reported not having visibility of all resources and their configurations, and only 33% said their organization has the resources to continuously detect, investigate and remove threats in their IaaS infrastructure.

“It is imperative that security is prioritized as organizations continue to adopt cloud services. This includes implementing traditional threat-based protections, as well as risk-based mitigations. Unpatched vulnerabilities and misconfigured resources are both preventable mistakes and avoidable risks that make life easier for attackers. Most attackers are not unstoppable criminal masterminds, but rather opportunistic cyber thugs looking for an easy payday,” according to Sophos.

However, the survey also found that more advanced IaaS users are twice as likely to report a decrease in attack impact than beginners, suggesting the appropriate defense mechanisms can go a long w

There are rising #cyberattacks and cyber security incidents are a global phenomenon. The government is fully cognisant and aware of various cyber security threats. Apple, Meta, Twitter, and Samsung have all disclosed cybersecurity attacks this year.

The number of cyberattacks in India has recorded a steady growth over the past few years, and the total number as reported to and tracked by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) in the current year stands at 12,67,564 (till November), the Parliament was told.

The corresponding number of such incidents in 2018 was 2,08,456 which increased to 3,94,499 in 2019, to 11,58,208 in 2020 and 14,02,809 in 2021, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

Digital channels are not used just for shopping; consumers have started to learn, work, shop, entertain themselves, connect with others via video chats and even improve their well-being using online fitness and wellness apps. Even traditional in-person business services are shifting online, including medical consultations, education, legal and accountancy services.

The Minister said that with the borderless cyberspace coupled with anonymity, along with the rapid growth of the Internet, the rise in cyber-attacks and cyber security incidents is a global phenomenon and the government is fully cognisant and aware of various cyber security threats.

CERT-In is mandated to track and monitor cyber security incidents in India. In the recently notified cyber security direction, CERT-In has now made it mandatory for all incidents to be mandatorily reported to it.

The minister said that CERT-In operates an automated cyber threat exchange platform for proactively collecting, analysing and sharing tailored alerts with organisations across sectors for proactive threat mitigation actions by them. Critical Infrastructure sectors More at Risk of Cyberattacks in 2023

The National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre in India, an organisation of the Government of India designated as the National Nodal Agency in respect of Critical Information Infrastructure Protection, has identified the following as ‘Critical Sectors’ – Power & Energy, Banking, Financial Services & Industrance, Telecom, Transport, Government and Strategic & Public Enterprises.

All of these, which provide services that are essential to the day-to-day functioning of society, are hives of the most sensitive and confidential data that threat actors can easily be monetised on the Dark Web, driving further cybercrime and disruption.

Unfortunately, the potential for widespread disruption has not gone unnoticed by cybercriminals. In India, close to seven critical infrastructure attacks have wreaked havoc for those within that industry – from the Oil India Limited ransomware attack in April, and in May on grounded SpiceJet flights, leaving passengers stranded for 4 hours, to Goa’s flood monitoring system in June and banking data breaches reported in August to the more recent cyberattacks on the AIIMS healthcare sector and resulting onslaught on Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, have left authorities understanding the need to prepare for an escalation in cyberattacks in future.

This focus on critical infrastructure is intentional. Cybercriminals are fully aware of the impact that any disruption has on vital services, not just financially but also on public confidence. For example, in utilities, you cannot expect people to be without electricity or water, which means companies are more likely to pay in the event of ransomware.

Hackers are also very observant and will strike during periods of unrest, for example using the ongoing energy crisis as an entry point for phishing or man-in-the-middle attacks.

Another common risk factor among critical infrastructure organizations is that they all have a hig
