भारत वर्ष में लगभग 2 प्रतिशत लोग 'सफेद दाग' से पीड़ित है। एक अध्ययन के अनुसार बहुत सारे मरीज उचित चिकित्सा ना मिलने के कारण इस समस्या से आजीवन जूझते रहते हैं, लगभग 30 प्रतिशत लोगों में उनकी आदतों के कारण, 25 प्रतिशत लोगों में गलत खान-पान के कारण, 21 प्रतिशत लोगों में असंतुलित मनोस्थिति और अन्यों में वातावरण, सफेद दाग के प्रमुख कारण है। इसके कारण रोगियों को गंभीर पारिवारिक और सामाजिक दबाव का सामना करना पड़ता है, उन्हें दोस्त बनाने में, नौकरी पाने में, शादी करने में, अपने मनपसंद कपड़े पहनकर बाहर जानें में और किसी कार्यक्रम में जाने में भी बहुत असहजता का सामना करना पड़ता है।

സ്ത്രീപുരുഷന്മാരെ ഒരുപോലെ ബാധിക്കുന്ന ഒന്നാണ് ഈ രോഗം. ജനിതകപരമായ ഘടകങ്ങൾ വെള്ളപ്പാണ്ടിനെ സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ചർമത്തിന് നിറം നൽകുന്ന വർണവസ്തുവാണ് മെലാനിൻ. ഇവ ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് ചർമത്തിലെ കോശങ്ങളായ മെലാനോ സൈറ്റുകളാണ്. ഇവ പലകാരണങ്ങൾ മൂലം നശിക്കുന്നതു കൊണ്ട് മെലാനിന്റെ നിർമാണം കുറയുന്നു. ചർമം വെള്ളനിറമായി മാറുന്നു.
വിറ്റെലിയസ് എന്ന ലാറ്റിൻ പദത്തിൽനിന്നാണ് വിറ്റിലിഗോ എന്ന പദം വന്നത്. എഡി രണ്ടാം ശതകത്തിൽ റോമൻ ഫിസിഷ്യനായ സെൽസസ് ആണ് ഈ പദം ആദ്യമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചത്. ക്രിസ്തുവിന് 6000 വർഷം മുൻപ് രചിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഋഗ്വേദത്തിൽ വെള്ളപ്പാണ്ടിനെപ്പറ്റി വിവരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അഥർവവേദത്തിൽ കുഷ്ഠരോഗത്തിന്റെ വകഭേദമായിട്ടാണ് വെള്ളപ്പാണ്ടിനെ വിവരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഇന്നും സമൂഹത്തിൽ ചിലരെങ്കിലും വെള്ളപ്പാണ്ടിനെ കുഷ്ഠരോഗമായി തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് എന്നതാണ് സത്യം.
വെള്ളപ്പാണ്ടുള്ളവരെ അവഗണിക്കാനും അകറ്റിനിർത്താനും പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പ്രധാനഘടകം ഇതുതന്നെ.
ലോകത്തിൽ ഇന്ത്യയിലും മെക്സിക്കോയിലുമാണ് വെള്ളപ്പാണ്ട് ബാധിതർ കൂടുതലുള്ളത്. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ 3-4 ശതമാനം പേർക്ക് ഇതുള്ളതായി പറയുന്നു. ലോക ജനസംഖ്യയുടെ 0.1 - 1.3 ശതമാനം ജനങ്ങളിൽ വെള്ളപ്പാണ്ടുണ്ട്. വെള്ളപ്പാണ്ട് ഏതു പ്രായക്കാരെയും ബാധിക്കാം. ചിലരിൽ ജന്മനാ രോഗം പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടാറുണ്ട്. എട്ടോപ്പിക്ക് ഡർമറ്റൈറ്റിസ് ബാധിതർക്ക് ഈ അസുഖം കൂടുതലായി കാണാം. അച്ഛനോ അമ്മയ്ക്കോ വെള്ളപ്പാണ്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ മക്കൾക്ക് വരാനുള്ള സാധ്യത 20-30 ശതമാനംവരെയാണ്. ഇരട്ടക്കുട്ടികളിൽ ഒരാളെ വെള്ളപ്പാണ്ട് ബാധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ മറ്റെയാളെ ബാധിക്കാനുള്ള സാധ്യത 50 ശതമ
