Eileen Brennan, an actress nominated for an Oscar in 1981 for her supporting role as tough-talking drill captain Doreen Lewis in Goldie Hawn comedy 'Private Benjamin,' died on Sunday. She was 80. Eileen Brennan's management company, Unified Management, said she passed away in a Burbank hospice after a battle with bladder cancer. Eileen Brennan was born in 1932 in Los Angeles to parents Regina Manahan, a silent film actress, and John Gerald Brennan, a doctor. After studying at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and then the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, Eileen Brennan landed the title role in the off-Broadway production 'Little Mary Sunshine' in 1959. After two years of playing Irene Malloy alongside Carol Channing's Dolly Levi Gallagher in the original 1964 Broadway production of 'Hello, Dolly,' Eileen Brennan came to Hollywood. Eileen Brennan's memorable titles in her long filmography stretching through five decades include 1974 Best Picture Oscar winner, 'The Sting,' 1976 crime comedy 'Murder by Death,' and 1985 caper comedy, 'Clue,' in which she starred as Mrs. Peacock. Eileen Brennan, a veteran actress best known for an Oscar-nominated turn in the 1980 comedy 'Private Benjamin,' one of her many tough-talking, soft-hearted roles, has died. She was 80.
Brennan died of bladder cancer Sunday at her home in Burbank, according to her manager, Jessica Moresco.
The actress was the epitome of the 'gruff but lovable' type, often bringing comedic sparkle to workaday frustrations while playing figures worn weary by their lives but still able to laugh off the worst.
It was in her role as the growling Capt. Doreen Lewis in 'Private Benjamin,' who oversaw the unlikely Army enlistee played by Goldie Hawn, that Brennan found her biggest success. The film was a box-office hit and earned three Oscar nominations, including one for Brennan as best supporting actress. She won an Emmy for her part in the television spin-off.
Brennan was nominated seven times for Emmy Awards, including for appearances on 'Taxi,' 'Thirtysomething,' 'Newhart' and 'Will & Grace.'
Verla Eileen Regina Brennan was born Sept. 3, 1932, in Los Angeles to Regina Menehan, a former silent film actress, and John Gerald Brennan, a doctor.

Brennan's managers, Jessica Moresco and Al Onorato, said she died Sunday at home in Burbank after a battle with bladder cancer.
'Our family is so grateful for the outpouring of love and respect for Eileen,' her family said in a statement. 'She was funny and caring and truly one of a kind. Her strength and love will never be forgotten.'
Brennan got her first big role on the New York stage in 'Little Mary Sunshine,' a musical comedy that won her the 1960 Obie award for best actress. Along with her 'excellent singing voice,' her performance was 'radiant and comic,' said a New York Times review.
But it was a series of sharp-tongued roles that won her fans on television and in movies, including gruff Army Capt. Doreen Lewis in 1980s 'Private Benjamin,' aloof Mrs. Peacock in 1985's 'Clue' and mean orphanage superintendent Miss Bannister in 1988's 'The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking.'
