As expected, Google held a press conference today to announce the new Nexus 7 tablet and Android 4.3 OS. What was kept relatively secret was Chromecast, a new dongle that allows you to connect your mobile devices and laptops to your television. Scott explains how Chromecast works, and highlights some of the features of the new tablet and OS as well.

Google has announced a low-cost competitor to Apple TV - a 'dongle' device called Chromecast.
The dongle is plugged into a television's HDMI port, and allows users to stream media from smartphones, tablets and computers.
Launching immediately in the US, the device will cost $35 (£23). There is as yet no word on international launches.
Google also announced an upgraded Nexus 7 tablet, the first to run the new version of the Android system.
Failed attempts
Chromecast is Google's latest attempt to gain ground in the television industry.
In 2012, Google faltered in its attempts to make a move into the living room, considered by many experts to be ripe ground for making large profits through advertising.
Google's partnership with Sony, with which it released a £200 set-top box, was poorly received.
That attempt followed an even earlier false start in 2010 when it launched Google TV, a service that was blocked by several TV networks, and suffered greatly from requiring consumers to buy expensive hardware.
More recently, the orb-shaped Nexus Q device, announced last year, fell flat almost immediately - Google pulled it from sale in response to 'feedback'.

It's a very clever little device that shows how to do the living room right.
Last month I wrote a piece called 'How Apple does not care about your living room'. The idea behind this piece is that all those companies that are desperately trying to push complex technology to modify the main television in the living room are rather missing the point.
1960s
The living room isn't as important as it once was. This isn't the 1960s where we all cluster round and spend all our time as a happy little nuclear family in one place.
The home is now a place where we consume content through mobile devices wherever we happen to be inside it. Increasingly, we're spending more time away from broadcast television, plus more time relating to others through social networking services. Sitting down and actually watching TV together is happening less.
In that context it makes far more sense to invent a little device that can somehow improve every television in the house in some way. Which is exactly what Chromecast is. Spend $35, somehow work out how to get power to it, somehow set it up, and your existing TV is a little bit improved.

Google's Chromecast is Mountain View's next foray into the television market. In brief, it's a $35 HDMI dongle that mirrors content being played nearby on a tablet, smartphone or computer. Hrm, that sounds familiar. The 2-inch device runs 'a simplified version of Chrome OS' and requires separate USB power; connect it to your local WiFi network and similarly connected devices work with Chromecast. It can be ordered right now on Google Play and will apparently ship in one to two days. Of note, the device seems US-only for now, as our UK colleagues are showing a 'not available in your country' prompt. Early buyers get three months of free Netflix with the purchase. Additionally, it's also heading to retail (read: Best Buy) on July 28th. Google ended its presentation with a quick word that Chromecast functionality will eventually come embedded in various other devices, and that it's working on getting other countries access 'as quickly as possible.' No specs were given during the presentation, but its Google Play page lists the device as HDMI-CEC compatible, and it uses 2.4GHz 801.11 b/g/n WiFi. Given the separate USB power required, the $35 nets you a Chromecast device, an HDMI extended, a USB power cable and a separate power adapter.
