New Delhi: Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, while taking part in the debate on the historic Food Security Bill in the Parliament, requested all the members to pass UPA's flagship welfare scheme to provide subsidized food to the poor in the country. While speaking in the Lok Sabha, a determined and confident Sonia Gandhi asserted, 'Some people ask whether we have enough resources to successfully implement this bill. But it is not a question of how we find means to implement Food Bill; we have to find the way. The question is not whether we can do it or not; we have to do it. Some people also ask whether this bill is beneficial for the farmers. I want to underline that we have always given prominence to farmers and agriculture'. 'We had promised in 2009 that we will bring the Food Security Bill to provide subsidized food grains to the poor and I am happy to say on behalf of my party that we are fulfilling that promise' added Sonia Gandhi.

'The national food security bill, 2013 has received the assent of the President of India,' said a statement from the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Lok Sabha passed the bill August 26 while the Rajya Sabha cleared it September 2. The bill was introduced in Parliament in December 2011. “As you all know we have no control on the international prices of oil which have gone up from 40 dollars per barrels 10 years ago, to 140 dollars per barrel today. You know that we import 80% of crude oil from which we make petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas. We continue to subsidise kerosene which must be done. In spite of these, UPA government is doing its best not to burden the people with more hardships. As we hold the responsibility as a Government at the Centre, the state government also has some responsibility. I want to ask the BJP government here why have not the government increase the limit of LPG cylinders to a family from 6 to 9. This is what our Congress government has done in the states ruled by us. Why has the Karnataka Government not reduced the VAT on diesel, just like our Congress led governments have done? So it is very easy to criticize others but what about you (the state government), what are you doing to reduce the hardships of your people? It is your (state government’s) responsibility as much as ours†said Sonia Gandhi.
