Randy Jackson leaving: Time for major American Idol makeover?

After 11 seasons on American Idol, the Last Judge Standing, Randy Jackson, is vacating his seat, reports TMZ. He'll stick around as a mentor, but not as a judge.

That means the show's original three judges - Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and now Mr. Jackson – have left American Idol.

How much does it matter who the judges are? After all, the show has cycled through plenty of them over the years.

One could make the case that Jackson's exit could benefit the show. Many longtime fans could fairly well predict by now what he would say. Fresh judges, fresh insights?

In any case, American Idol may be ready for a major makeover. Last year's season finale, with Jessica Sanchez vs. Phil Phillips, had the smallest audience of any American Idol finale; even smaller than the first American Idol finale which aired in the slower summer months. Season 11's finale got just 21.5 million viewers. The biggest viewership for an American Idol finale was 38.1 million in 2003.

American Idol remains a cash cow for Fox. It pulls in about $500,000 for a 30-second commercial, and it remains one of the biggest draws on TV, despite a decline in audience in recent years. But few blame the cast of judges as responsible for the decline. Most observers say the ebb is a result of a combination of audience atigue and the rise of copy cat co

Randy Jackson - OUT as 'American Idol' Judge!

Randy Jackson will not return as a judge on 'American Idol,' but will remain involved with the show and its contestants as a mentor, TMZ reported on Friday.
A source for the website reportedly claimed execs at the reality hit are concerned Randy may not actually be 'well-suited for the mentor role,' but feel his presence is necessary in some form as he's 'the glue that helps keep the show together.'
Previously, multiple outlets, including the Associated Press, reported that Nicki Minaj was set to fill one of the vacation judges' chairs, but TMZ claimed on Friday the deal is close, but still not completed.
Another change? 'Idol' will reportedly go with four judges again this year, the website reported.
If Randy does indeed leave, the entire panel for Season 12 will be filled with new faces as former judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez announced they were leaving the FOX series in July.
Reps for Randy and FOX were not immediately available for comment on Randy's reported 'Idol' exit when contacted by Access Hollywood on Friday.

“American Idol’s” game of musical chairs may have taken another casualty as new reports claim Randy Jackson is vacating his post as judge — a spot he’s held since the singing competition premiered in 2002.
Jackson is reportedly stepping away from the judges’ table but would continue to play a role in the show as a mentor to the contestants. No word on what capacity that mentorship would be.
“Idol” currently relies on guest musicians to dole out advice alongside Jimmy Iovine, the in-house “Idol” mentor and chairman of Interscope/ Geffen/ A&M (contestants broker deals through Universal Music Group, with Interscope proving popular among them).
Speculation over who will occupy the judges’ table when the competition kicks off its 12th season in January went into overdrive the moment Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler announced their departures after two seasons. Pop diva Mariah Carey became the highest paid judge in reality TV when she inked a
