South Africa started the day with 245/8 on the board, hoping to at least reach the 300 mark to try and put the Pakistan top order under pressure. Their chances were dealt a severe blow when centurion Hashim Amla was dismissed the second ball of the morning for 118. Dale Steyn tried to lift Ajmal over the ropes, but only succeeded in being stumped by Adnan Akmal with his score on 15. Pakistan bowled South Africa out for 249, in 93 overs. Mohammad Irfan and Zilfiqur Babar were the top performers with the ball for Pakistan, taking 3 wickets each.
Khurram Manzoor en debutant Shan Masood opened the innings for Pakistan, facing up the for formidable pace attack of Steyn, Philander and Morkel. The pair played out the first wave of attack, going on to post a 135 runs opening partnership. Masood was the first man dismissed for Pakistan, when he was trapped lbw by JP Duminy in the 44th over for a very well-played 75 on debut.
South Africa played them back into contention, when picking up the wickets of Azhar Ali and Younis Khan in quick succession, thanks for the bowling of Philander and Morkel. Ever reliable Misbah-ul-Haq joined Khurram Manzoor to stabilize the innings. Manzoor reached his maiden test century off 198 balls, to huge applause from the crowd and his team mates.Misbah survived a few anxious moment with the new ball, when he was caught at slip by the opposition captain, but the third umpire ruled that the ball had in fact touch the ground.
