The 216th anniversary of the very first parachute jump has been celebrated in a Google Doodle.
Google has changed the design of its homepage to celebrate Andre-Jacque Garnerin’s jump on October 22 1797 from a balloon above Parc Monceau in Paris.
The Frenchman used a seven-metre silk parachute resembling an umbrella to ease his path to the ground.
When Garnerin’s balloon reached 3,000 feet above the park, he cut his basket loose and opened the parachute.
Visitors to Google’s homepage can now recreate that leap using their right and left arrow keys to guide the path of their parachutist safely towards the ground.
The French daredevil emerged from the basked unscathed, despite it jerking in the air and a violent landing.

Google commemorates the 216th anniversary of the first parachute jump made by André-Jacques Garnerin with an interactive doodle.
The animated doodle depicts Garnerin in a basket about to make a descent. You have to click either of the two buttons set in a cloud to start playing. You can control the descent of the parachute and determine its landing by using the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard.
Born on 31 January 1769, Garnerin was an inspector with the French army before became a balloonist. He studied under the ballooning pioneer professor Jacques Charles and performed many parachuting trips for exhibitions working mostly with his brother Jean-Baptiste-Olivier Garnerin. Eventually he was appointed Official Aeronaut of France.
Garnerin performed the daring feat on October 22, 1797 at Parc Monceau in Paris using a seven-metre silk parachute. He was lifted up in a basket which was attached to a balloon and after reaching 3,000 feet, he released the balloon to let the parachute unfurled above him.
Although he had a bumpy landing, he emerged unhurt and became the first parachutist.
Garnerin died on 18 August 1823 at a construction site when a beam fell on him while he was building his next balloon.

Rapid Trident 2011 is a U.S. Army Europe led, multi-national exercise taking place at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in Yavoriv, Ukraine. It is designed to promote regional stability and security, strengthen international military partnering and foster trust while improving interoperability between participating nations. Rapid Trident 2011 involves approximately 1,600 personnel. In addition to the U.S. Army Europe and Ukraine, participants include: Latvia, Belarus, Moldova, Slovenia, Canada, Poland, Serbia, the UK, Lithuania, Estonia, California and Utah National Guard and U.S. Air Force Europe. Rapid Trident supports interoperability among Ukraine, the United States, NATO and Partnership for Peace member nations. This exercise will help prepare participants to operate successfully in a joint, multinational, integrated environment with host- nation support from civil and governmental agencies. Rapid Trident is a part of U.S. European Command's Joint Training and Exercise Program, designed to enhance joint combined interoperability with allied and partner nations.
