Former NFL tight end and broadcaster Todd Christensen died Wednesday morning in Salt Lake City due to complications from surgery, according to BYU, Christensen's alma mater.
Christensen had fought liver disease and other illnesses in recent years, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
A collegiate star at BYU, Christensen played in the NFL for 11 seasons after being picked by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 1978 draft.
He joined the Oakland Raiders midway through the 1979 season (after starting it with the New York Giants) and won two Super Bowl rings with the Silver & Black. He became a star for the team once it moved to Los Angeles in 1982. He caught four passes for 32 yards in the Super Bowl XVIII blowout of the Washington Redskins following the 1983 season.
He set a single-season record for tight ends with 92 receptions in 1983, and broke it three years later with 95 catches. He finished his career with 461 receptions for 5,872 yards with 41 TDs.
Tom Flores, Raiders' head coach during Christensen's career, spoke Wednesday morning about his star tight end.
Christensen was 32 when his NFL career ended in 1988, but he stayed in the limelight. He had tryouts with the Oakland Athletics and California Angels. He even hit a home run during his workout with the A's in 1990.

Jim Plunkett knew Todd Christensen as a fun guy who loved catching passes, especially in the end zone and sometimes on plays in which he was supposed to be blocking.
Christensen's former broadcast partners fondly recall his big personality, too, and the fancy words he used with ease.
Christensen, 57, a five-time Pro Bowl tight end with the Oakland/Los Angeles/during his NFL career (1978-1988), died Wednesday at a hospital near his home in Alpine, Utah, from complications during liver transplant surgery.
Plunkett, the former Raiders quarterback who teamed with Christensen on two Super Bowl championship teams, learned Christensen was ill after seeing him at a Raider reunion in July 2012.
'He had lost of lot of weight. And I didn't find out until afterwards that he was ill and looking for a transplant' for 10 months, says Plunkett.
Christensen, a devout Mormon, did not drink. Toby, one of his four sons, told the Associated Press the family believed the liver problems began 25 years ago after a 'botched' gall bladder operation.
Playing at 6-3, 230 in the NFL, Christensen finished with 461 receptions for 5,872 yards and 41 touchdowns in the regular season, including 92 catches for 1,247 yards and 12 touchdowns in 1983.

A running back at Brigham Young University, Christensen became a tight end in the NFL and played 10 seasons for the Oakland and L.A. Raiders, winning Super Bowl rings in 1981 and 1984. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Christensen was among the tight ends at the cutting edge, those who did some blocking but were more adept as receivers.
'There was a stretch for us where, if there was a big catch that was made, Todd made it,' Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen said Wednesday. 'He'd trap it with his body at high risk. He came down with the ball.'

Former BYU standout and Oakland Raider tight end Todd Christensen died Wednesday morning due to complications from surgery, BYU announced.
Christensen was 57 and, per the Salt Lake Tribune, had battled liver disease and other illnesses.
As a Raider, Christensen won two Super Bowls (1980, 1983), attended five Pro Bowls (1983-1987), and twice led the NFL in receptions. In 1983, Christensen caught 92 passes for a career-high 1,247 yards and 12 touchdowns, helping lead the Raiders to a 38-9 win over the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII.
Christensen retired from football in 1988.
Following his football career Christensen also gained fame as a broadcaster, working as an NFL analyst for NBC in the early 1990s, briefly co-hosting the fondly remembered 'American Gladiators' with Mike Adamle, and appearing as a color analyst for ESPN, the mtn., and CBS Sports Network.
A Pennsylvania native who grew up in Eugene, Oregon, Christensen earned a scholarship with the Cougars and played from 1974 to 1977, starring as an all-purpose running back. Christensen led the team in receiving three times and finishing with 152 career receptions for 1,568 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The Dallas Cowboys took Christensen in the second round of the 1978 draft, with Christensen moving to the Raiders -- and to tight end -- in 1979.
He was inducted into the BYU Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.

Taken in the second round of the 1978 draft by the Dallas Cowboys, Christensen broke his foot during training camp and didn't play in the regular season for the eventual NFC champions. He was released before the next season.
