Lou Reed (born Lewis Allan 'Lou' Reed) has died Sunday. The cause has yet to be released, although we know that he underwent a liver transplant back in May. At the time of the operation, his wife (experimental composer and musician) Laurie Anderson, suggested that he might not 'ever totally recover'. Reed later posted on Facebook describing himself as a 'triumph of modern medicine' and that he is looking forward to playing live again. He made it back to the stage by June 20, but by July 2 he was rushed to hospital with 'severe dehydration'.

Best known for his work in the seminal rock group Velvet Underground, his contributions to music would be hard to overstate. Reed had a profound impact on American culture with the introduction of avant garde rock and pop art to mainstream music. His work with Andy Warhol is noted as one of the most important collaborations in contemporary culture.

Earlier this morning his official Facebook Page posted this photo with the title 'The Door'. While not an official word on his death, it serves as a acknowledgement of the passing.
