Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is regarded as the most iconic cricket ground and has given some pleasant memories to all the cricket fans in the country. The 2011 World Cup final where India lifted the title after 20 odd years took place at Wankhede Stadium makes the venue more special. While the stadium is all set to host 20 games of the Indian Premier League, CricTracker looks back at some interesting stats related to the stadium, which will help us understand the venue more.
India’s most iconic stadium was born out of a tussle between the Cricket Club of India, which owns Brabourne Stadium, and the Bombay Cricket Association (now MCA) over the allocation of tickets for cricket matches. At the initiative of S.K. Wankhede, then secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association, BCA built the new stadium in South Bombay near the Churchgate station.
It was built in approx. 13-months and opened in time for the final Test between India and the West Indies in 1975. The architect of the stadium was Shashi Prabhu. Since then, Wankhede Stadium has taken over the stature of the main cricketing venue in the city. Wankhede Stadium was named after the Association’s President Barrister Sheshrao Wankhede in 1974.

Sachin Tendulkar retired from international cricket after playing his 200th and final Test. India went on to win the second and final Test against the West Indies in Mumbai by innings and 126 runs to seal the series 2-0 and present Tendulkar with a perfect farewell gift. The entire Indian team gave a moving lap of honour to the Little Master as soon as the match ended. The Master Blaster gave an emotional speech that had everyone in tears at the Wankhede Stadium. Rarely has there been a more emotional farewell than the one that Sachin Tendulkar has just received from his adoring countrymen - a packed stadium, a beautiful final inning, and Indian victory, crowds chanting 'Sachin Sachin', an emotional farewell speech, and to cap it all a Bharat Ratna.
When I met Sachin this evening for a special interview, he still seemed almost wonderstruck at the emotional outpouring that has taken place all around him. At the moment, he is still trying to soak it all in and will then plan to start his next step. He did hint at some of his plans though to NDTV - a lot more time with the family of course. Especially with his children. And a clear indication that he was going to be working on an autobiography. You can bet your last dollar that that is going to fly off the shelf.
And though journalists are usually supposed to be completely detached from the story, I couldn't resist thanking him on behalf of all of us for the memories and for helping India believe in itself.
