The search engine Google is showing this interactive animated Doodle on May 4th, 2015 for celebrating 360th Birthday of Bartolomeo Cristofori.

Cristofori was an Italian musical instrument maker credited with inventing the piano. One of his biggest innovations was creating a hammer mechanism that struck the strings on a keyboard to create sound. The use of a hammer made it possible to produce softer or louder sounds depending upon how light or hard a player pressed on the keys.

Cristofori was born on May 4, 1655 in Padua in the Republic of Venice

The total number of pianos built by Cristofori is unknown. Only three survive today, all dating from the 1720s.

The piano as built by Cristofori in the 1720s boasted almost all of the features of the modern instrument. It differed in being of very light construction, lacking a metal frame; this meant that it could not produce an especially loud tone. This continued to be the rule for pianos until around 1820, when iron bracing was first introduced.

Who invented the piano? Google doodle marks Bartolomeo Cristofori's 360th birthday-HD

Google's latest doodle celebrates the 360th birthday of the man widely credited with inventing the piano.

Bartolomeo Cristofori was born in Padua on this day in 1655 in what was then the Republic of Venice.

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, the instrument Cristofori invented was referred to during his lifetime as a harpsichord that plays soft and loud, from which its name is derived. In Italian, the phrase is gravicembalo col piano e forte.

On the blog dedicated to its doodles, Google wrote that one of Cristofori's 'biggest innovations was creating a hammer mechanism that struck the strings on a keyboard to create sound. The use of a hammer made it possible to produce softer or louder sounds depending upon how light or hard a player pressed on the keys'.

It added: 'Being able to change the volume was a major breakthrough. And that's exactly what doodler Leon Hong wanted to highlight in this interactive doodle.'

Cristofori's entry in Encyclopaedia Britannica notes that little is known of his life and that his invention was not well known in his lifetime, even if it has since become ubiquitous.

It reads: 'Cristofori apparently invented the piano around 1709, and, according to contemporary sources, four of his pianos existed in 1711.'

Google Doodle celebrates Julius Richard Petri - inventor of the Petri dish - on what would have been his 161st birthday

Google is commemorating the achievements of the scientist Julius Richard Petri today with a Google Doodle that shows his invention - the Petri dish - in action.

Today would have been the German bacteriologist's 160th birthday. In the animation on the Google homepage, the word 'Google' is replaced with a series of the dishes in the Google colours. A hand appears, swabbing each of them, then you can watch as the bacteria grow.
The dishes are ubiquitous - familiar to anyone with lab experience from school to advanced biotech: transparent plates with small walls, used for culturing cells. Invented while Petri was assistant to Robert Koch, the father of modern bacteriology, the dish allowed scientists to purify or clone bacterial colonies derived from single cells, allowing them to identify the bacteria causing diseases - a simple idea that paved the way for countless discoveries and advances.

Petri died in 1921, aged 69.

Today, Google via their home page doodle celebrates the birth of Julius Richard Petri who invented the petri dish.

Julius Richard Petri was born on May 31, 1852 and died on December 20, 1921.

He would have been 160 years old today.

Petri studied medicine at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Academy for Military Physicians in Berlin . He then went on to work at the Imperial Health Office with Robert Koch who is considered the father of modern bacteriology.

Google's doodle features six petri dishes which when one clicks on the play button are swabbed by a hand. Images of bacteria grow and spread in the dishes. These bacteria go on to form the alphabeths that spell Google.

It is interesting to note that Petri was not the first to use agar, a substance made from algae to grow bacteria but he invented the standard dish in which it was done.

The petri dish helps scientists and researchers to better identify bacteria and the diseases they caused. Petri dishes later moved from the laboratory to classrooms where they are used by every student of biology for various experiments.

Gideon Sundback (April 24, 1880 -- June 21, 1954) was a Swedish-American electrical engineer. Gideon Sundback is most commonly associated with his work in the development of the zipper.

In 1905, Gideon Sundback started to work at Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1906, Sundback was hired to work for the Universal Fastener Company in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1909, Sundback married Elvira Aronson, who was daughter of the Swedish born plant manager, Peter Aronsson. Subsequently Sundback was promoted to the position of head designer at Universal Fastener.
Sundback made several advances in the development of the zipper between 1906 and 1914, while working for companies that later evolved into Talon, Inc. He built upon the previous work of other engineers such as Elias Howe, Max Wolff, and Whitcomb Judson. He was responsible for improving the 'Judson C-curity Fastener'. At that time the company's product was still based on hooks and eyes. Sundback developed an improved version of the C-curity, called the 'Plako', but it too had a strong tendency to pull apart, and wasn't any more successful than the previous versions. Sundback finally solved the pulling-apart problem in 1913, with his invention of the first version not based on the hook-and-eye principle, the 'Hookless Fastener No. 1'. He increased the number of fastening elements from four per inch to ten or eleven. His inven

One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful (5 Piano Guys, 1 piano) - ThePianoGuys

    STORY BEHIND THE SONG
The idea: A couple months ago the 5 of us were gathered round a piano prepping for a video shoot scheduled for that day. We were brainstorming ideas when one of us (can't remember who!) got off task and starting flicking a piano string. Since all of us are poster children for ADHD, it wasn't long before ALL of us had joined in -- banging out a beat, plucking a string, or hitting keys. The brainstorming meeting had been sabotaged beyond repair, but another music video idea was born!

The song: We went through several song possibilities before landing on 'What Makes You Beautiful' by One Direction. We like this song because its catchy and the music, lyrics, and video passed our 'sesame street' test (meaning family friendly). We thought about the ramifications of taking on a teenybopper boy band tune as five middle-aged married guys who are desperately holding on to their hairlines. One of us even has a son older than the guys in One Direction (we won't say who) :-) BUT you know us -- we love a good challenge! This one was so fun to write that the 'challenge' part of it never was felt. We just acted like kids playing a piano and it totally worked! :-) After we figured out the main 'techniques' of playing the piano unconventionally we loved experimenting with swapping out chords and throwing the structure of the song around until it clicked.
