Rhode Island's Olivia Culpo crowned Miss Universe, marking Miss USA's 1st win since 1997

A 20-year-old Boston University sophomore and a self-described 'cellist-nerd' brought the Miss Universe crown back to the United States for the first time in more than a decade when she won the televised contest Wednesday.

Olivia Culpo beat out 88 other beauty queens from six continents at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip to take the title from outgoing champion Leila Lopes of Angola.

Culpo wore a tight navy blue mini-dress with a sequined bodice as she walked on stage for the competition's opening number. Later in the night, she strutted in a purple and blue bikini, and donned a wintery red velvet gown with a plunging neckline.

Culpo's coronation ends a long losing spell for the U.S. in the competition co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC. An American had not won the Miss Universe title since Brook Lee won in 1997.

No one seemed more surprised than Culpo's family, who 'looked at her like she had three heads' when told them she was entering the Miss Rhode Island contest last year, her father Peter recalled.

'We didn't know a thing about pageants,' he said.

She won that contest in a rented $20 dress with a hole in it and then began working out, dieting, and studying current events on flashcards to compete for the Miss USA crown.

Man captures drone footage of a secret sunbather atop a 200ft wind turbine in Rhode Island.

Drone videos have become much of a craze all over the world, but you probably haven't seen one as bizarre as this.
Footage captured by drone pilot Kevin Miller, from San Diego, US, shows a man sunbathing on top of a huge wind turbine in Rhode Island.
Noticing the drone, the man waves as it hovers in the air.
It is unclear how the man got on top of the turbine, but the footage reveals an open hatch at the top where the man could have climbed through via a rung ladder inside the structure's support column.

20-year-old Rhode Island Cellist Wins Miss USA 2012

A 20-year-old cellist from Rhode Island won the Miss USA crown and will represent the United States in this year's Miss Universe pageant after voicing support for transgender beauty queens.
Olivia Culpo topped a field of 51 contestants on Sunday to take the title at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. She strutted across the stage in a lilac bikini and a fuchsia evening gown adorned with a sparkly belt.
In the dreaded interview round, Culpo was faced with the most difficult question of the night: 'Would you feel it would be fair that a transgender woman wins the Miss USA title over a natural-born woman?' Culpo never stumbled as she embraced the Miss Universe Organization's recent decision to admit transgender contestants. The question came from a pageant follower on Twitter, a first for the competition.
'I do think that that would be fair, but I can understand that people would be a little apprehensive to take that road because there is a tradition of natural-born women, but today where there are so many surgeries and so many people out there who have a need to change for a happier life, I do accept that because I believe it's a free country,' Culpo said.
Culpo said after the pageant that she wasn't put off by the question when she heard it.
'This is a free country and to each their own,' she said.

A 20-year-old cellist from Rhode Island won the Miss USA crown and will represent the United States in this year’s Miss Universe pageant after embracing transgender beauty queens.

Olivia Culpo topped a field of 51 beauty queens on Sunday to take the title at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

Culpo said she was short and chubby as a girl, but blossomed after a growth spurt. She spent her summers at band camp, playing her cello.

Miss Iowa USA Rebecca Hodge was named Miss Congeniality, and Miss Oregon USA Alaina Bergsma was named the most photogenic. They both won $1,000, but didn’t make the top 16.

Culpo will represent the United States at the 61st Miss Universe pageant later this year. An American has not been named Miss Universe since Brook Lee won the title in 1997.

The Miss Universe Organization is co-owned by NBC and Donald Trump. The competition is not affiliated with the Miss America pageant.
