Teófilo Stevenson Lawrence, the renowned Cuban amateur boxer to have won several medals, was born on 29 March 1952. Also an engineer, Teófilo is among the only three boxers (others being László Papp of Hungary and Félix Savón of Cuba) to win three Olympic gold medals. His stupefying hits and performance in the ring was what made BBC describe him as “Cuba's greatest boxer, once its most famous figure after Fidel Castro”. During his career, he received the opportunity by American fight promoters to challenge the world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali for a contract of US$5 million. However, Stevenson refused and had said, “What is one million dollars compared to the love of eight million Cubans?”
