On 6 February, 1968, the United players boarded a flight from Zemun Airport that had to stop in Munich to refuel. It was a snowy day and the aircraft had settled heavily on the runway and around the airport. Charlton and his United teammates were on board when the plane clipped the fence at the end of the runway on its last take-off attempt and a wing tore through a nearby house. This resulted towards severe damage to the flight along with serious injuries and deaths of passengers on board. Bobby Charlton suffered cuts to his head and severe shock and was admitted in a hospital for almost a week.
