Rahul Gandhi interacted with tribal workers at Mandla, Madhya Pradesh on March 22, 2014.

For hundreds of adivasi tendu leaf pickers subsisting at the periphery of the economy it was an opportunity to not only express their anguish against an unfair system, but also engage with a national political leader willing to listen and address their problems. Just before starting his conversation, Rahul Gandhi walked into the nearby forest to see how the women collected the tendu leaves in harsh conditions. The tribal women told Rahul Gandhi how they were paid a pittance for the leaves which took long hours to collect. They also shared with him the lack of other employment opportunities in their villages, which have no roads or electricity. Suhasini Maharani, a leaf picker, pointed out that while victims of car accidents received as much as three lakh rupees from insurance, the death of somebody in a leaf picker's family fetched them a paltry 3,000 rupees. 'We educate our children, but what's the point since there are no jobs,' she said, adding that people in villages did not even get the promised 100 days of work under the central MNREGA scheme.

Rahul Gandhi's interaction with salt pan workers in Gujarat on March 11, 2014

Rahul Gandhi on a day long visit to Gujarat on March 11, 2014 held an open discussion with members of the Agariya community, who work in the salt pans in the Little Rann of Kutch region. The workers pointed out the difficulty they faced in establishing title rights to the land where they have been living for generations.

'Development is not just limited to building roads and bridges. Till the time we don't provide a firm floor and a strong roof for the people, building roads will not benefit them. A basic minimum right has to be given to every Indian. To me, development must include every Indian...I cannot change your life in 10 days and I will be lying if I said so. But I promise I will work towards addressing your problems,' said Rahul Gandhi.

There are about 100,000 salt pan workers from the Agariya community in the state who have been producing salt for generations but still do not have access to basic facilities and titles to their land and hardly see any rural development for them.
