Alan Turing, born a century ago Saturday, was only 41 when he committed suicide. But into that short life, he crowded several lives. His essential insights into mathematics and the nature of computability dealt with the limits of what can be calculated by machines. One way to describe his achievement is to say that he was a genius of coded-ness, whether the code was mathematical, cryptological or biological.
In practical terms, Turing’s most remarkable achievement was helping develop the machines and algorithms that cracked the Enigma code used by the Germans in World War II. That work changed the outcome of the war because it gave the Allies an ear into German planning.
But Turing also lives on in symbolic or cultural terms. His name appears in any number of science fiction novels set in the future. That’s because some of Turing’s most important and most accessible work has to do with determining the nature of machine intelligence and how it differs from human intelligence. But he lived in a time when neither his genius nor the incalculable value of his work were a defense against society’s enmity toward gays. Homosexual acts were still a crime in England after the war.
Turing was convicted in 1952 and given a choice between prison or treatment with female hormones, a form of chemical castration. He chose the latter. His other punishment was losing his security clearance, which essentially sealed off from him a community in which he had flourishe.
CODEBREAKER tells the story of one of the most important scientists who ever lived. Alan Turing set in motion the computer age and his World War II codebreaking helped save two million lives. Instead of accolades and praise, Turing faced public disgrace because he was gay. This drama documentary broadcast in the United Kingdom in late 2011. Now distribution plans are being developed to bring this unique film to a worldwide audience

Vint Cerf, Google's chief Internet evangelist, described Alan Turing as 'The man challenged everyone's thinking.' And the doodle that Google has posted on its home page to honour the father computing Alan Turing's 100th birth anniversary will also set you thinking.
Alan Mathison Turing was a British mathematician who articulated the mathematical foundation and limits of computing, and was a key contributor to the Allied cryptanalysis of the German Enigma cipher during World War II.
The Alan Turing Google doodle is inspired by the Turing machine, conceptualised by Alan Turing in 1936. The device is used to simulate the logic of a computer algorithm and is helpful in explaining the functioning of a CPU.

Alan Turing was born 100 years ago. Google celebrates 'the father of computer science and artificial intelligence' with an interactive 'intelligence test doodle'. It's a kind of 'Turing machine'.
I have to think some minutes before I checked how it works. Here are the results of the 6 tasks. When you did it correct one more Google logo char is filled with color.
Very nice doodle - but it takes some time :-)

George Jones performed hundreds of times at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry House – whether on the WSM Radio show, or appearing on such shows from the auditorium like the CMA Awards, so it's only appropriate that this morning's funeral has turned out to be a farewell fit for a country king.
Open to the public, fans started lining up yesterday for a chance to say farewell to the artist known as 'The Possum.' Famous friends who either spoke or performed during the 2 hour, 40 minutes-long service included Kid Rock, Travis Tritt, Alan Jackson, Patty Loveless, former First Lady Laura Bush and others.
WSM announcer Eddie Stubbs welcomed the crowd to the Opry House, and proceeded to introduce longtime family friend Tanya Tucker and the Imperials, who performed a beautiful version of the Gospel classic 'The Old Rugged Cross,' ending the performance by saying 'I'm gonna miss you, Possum.' Tucker was one of several acts that was slated to perform with Jones on his final concert – which was slated for November 22 in Nashville.
Nashville radio personality Keith Bilbrey spoke next, followed by Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam who praised the singer for being an ambassador to the state of Tennessee.
Pastor Mike Wilson was next on the hallowed stage, who asked for prayers on behalf of George's family and friends. Bilbrey then introduced a pair of artists who had deep ties to Jones. The first was Randy Tr
