England manager Roy Hodgson spoke about the position of Wayne Rooney in his squad on Monday (28th March), on the eve of the international friendly against the Netherlands at Wembley.

'I think that I have spoken enough about Wayne Rooney and I don't have anything to add to what I have already said he is the captain of the team, before he got injured nobody was disputing his right to be captain of the team. As far as I know he is not making any claims that he should always be in the team and nobody else should get a chance. As far as I understand it he realizes there will be other players fighting for places in the team and I would be very disappointed in a man of his quality and experience if he didn't understand that so I don't want to subscribe or to have any influence on what is said and written, but can write what they like, but we are quite happy that there is a large body of players at the moment that are fighting for a small number of places.'.
