Google on Thursday night put out a special doodle on its home page for India, marking Mangalyaan's one month in Mars orbit. The doodle which is static, unlike a few dynamic ones that Google puts out on some occasions, shows the Mangalyaan in outer space with a portion of the red planet in the background.

It is an illustrated image, fashioned in the style of space-related images that often used to adorn school notebooks in the late 80s and 90s.
Mangalyaan, which was blasted off into space on November 5 last year, entered the Mars orbit on September 24. It has been one of the biggest scientific achievements for India, putting ISRO, India's space agency, in the select group of four space agencies that have successfully sent a probe to Mars orbit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Mars mission as a major achievement. 'History has been created today. We have achieved the near impossible. I congratulate all ISRO scientists and all my fellow Indians on this historic achievement,' he said on the day Mangalyaan entered the Mars orbit. 'The odds were stacked against us. Of the 51 missions attempted across the world so far, a mere 21 had succeeded. But we have prevailed.'

अंतरिक्ष के क्षेत्र में भारत की सफलताओं में एक और सफलता जुड़ गई है। मंगल मिशन पर गए MOM को कल तीन साल पूरे हो जाएंगे, तो वही मंगलयान की ओर से ली गई मंगल ग्रह की एक तस्वीर को National Geographic Magazine ने अपना कवर फोटो बनाया है।दरअसल मंगल मिशन पर गए MOM को 22 नवंबर को तीन साल पूरे हो जाएंगे और भारत के लिए किसी उपलब्धि से कम नहीं होगा। इसके साथ ही मंगलयान ने मंगल ग्रह की एक तस्वीर भी ली है, जिसे मशहूर अंतर्राष्ट्रीय पत्रिका National Geographic Magazine ने कवर फोटो बनाया है। हालांकि यह तस्वीर साधारण कैमरे से ली गई है, लेकिन इसमें मंगल ग्रह की तकरीबन पूरी तस्वीर एक साथ दिखाई दे रही है। विशेषज्ञों की मानें तो मंगल ग्रह की हाई रिजोल्यूशन की इतनी बड़ी तस्वीर बहुत कम ही उपलब्ध है। भले ही दुनिया के तमाम देशों ने लाल ग्रह की कई तस्वीरों को लिया हो लेकिन MoM की ओर से खीचीं गई यह तस्वीर बेहद उम्दा है। बहरहाल यूरोपीय, अमेरिकी और रूसी यान लाल ग्रह की कक्षा में या जमीन पर कई प्रयासों के बाद पहुंचे थे, लेकिन भारत का मंगलयान पहली ही कोशिश में मंगल पर पहुंच गया और पहली ही कोशिश में मंगल पर पहुंचना वाला भारत पहला देश बन गया।

After a 10-month space journey, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) has arrived at Mars.
On Wednesday at 2:29 GMT, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) confirmed that the unmanned probe had successfully executed a 24 minute and 14 second engine burn to go into orbit around the Red Planet.
Due to the laws of orbital mechanics, the autonomous engine burn had to take place while the MOM probe was flying behind Mars out of telemetry contact with Earth. If the engine fired incorrectly, the probe could have been hurled back into space or burned up in the Martian atmosphere. After contact was reestablished with mission control in Bangalore, they confirmed the probe had settled into its proper elliptical orbit.
MOM was launched on November 5, 2013 from the ISRO’s Satish Dhawan Space Center on the island of Sriharikota on top of a PSLV-C25 rocket.
MOM’s design calls for a highly elliptical, 77-hour-orbit that will bring the probe as close as 365 km and as far away as 80,000 km from the planet.
The Mangalyaan robotic probe, one of the cheapest interplanetary missions on record, will soon start studying the Red Planet’s atmosphere. The probe has a camera and four scientific instruments. MOM will search for methane, a key sign for scientists looking for signs of life on Mars.
