Former NFL player Wade Davis, who came out publicly to Outsports.com this week, said in an interview with CNN that he didn't tell anyone he was gay when he played in the league because he wanted to be known as a football player, not as a gay person.
'Me being a gay person wasn't what I wanted to be known for,' he said.
Davis was a defensive back for the Tennessee Titans, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins and retired from the NFL seven years ago.
'I don't believe most NFL players have a problem with having a gay teammate. I do get the feeling they have to protect who they are,' Davis said. 'At the end of the day it's a job, so all of these players have to make sure they're in a certain type of light.'
Former teammate Jevon Kearse said he wouldn't have had a problem playing alongside Davis if he had known.
'I know there have been a lot more than just Wade,' Kearse said. 'It's just becoming more acceptable, which is a good thing so they can come out and not feel secluded.'
Davis, 34, now works for the Hetrick-Martin Institute, which serves lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth in New York City.
'It’s the first job since football that I wake up excited for work,' Davis said. 'For these kids, the question isn’t whether they are shooting a basketball well, it’s whether they .

Back in 2000, NFL defensive back Wade Davis was so afraid of being outed as a gay man that he spent thousands at a strip club , and didn't associate with other players who were 'different' on the warnings of a Tennessee Titans teammate.
Davis, who also played for the Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks as well as NFL Europe before injuries forced his retirement, spoke about his struggles with his sexuality as a pro athlete this week during interview with OutSports.com and SB Nation.
'Your biggest fear is that you'll lose that camaraderie and family,' said Davis. 'It's not like they'd like me less, it's that they have to protect their own brand.'
Now working for a LGBT organization in New York, Davis is also a community advocate volunteer for President Obama. No NFL player has ever come out during his career, and only a handful of players have talked about being gay after retirement. Davis said that he was coming out publicly in order to affect change in the world.

New York, NY, United States (AHN Sports) – Former NFL cornerback Wade Davis became the first professional football player to come out of the closet and openly admit that he’s gay.
But Davis had no regrets doing such admission recently, years after he last played his last game in the NFL.
In fact, Davis said that if can do it again, he would come out while he was still active in the NFL to make a stronger impact to others, especially to the youth who are victims of bullying.
“If I could do it all over again, I would come out while I was playing because I now understand the impact that that would have had,” Davis told CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien.
“And it can change the lives of so many youth with bullying that’s going on and with this youth just not having a sense of family,” added Davis, who played four years in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans, Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Redskins.
Explaining why it took years for him to reveal his true sexuality, Davis said it was only recently that he realized that he can effect change to others by telling the truth.
“I started to realize that, you know what, there’s an opportunity here for me to really make and effect change, not only within myself but in the world,” he said.
Davis admitted that as a tough man sport, it is very difficult to admit to being gay in the NFL as this would put a “soft” tag on a player.

San Francisco 49er Chris Culliver selfishly shot off his mouth yesterday, igniting a firestorm of controversy and creating a nightmare for his team and the National Football League as they head to the Super Bowl. For that alone the NFL should suspend him, his comments having put his entire team at the center of an unnecessary controversy as they're trying to focus on the game.
But for the horrendously bigoted, anti-gay content of his remarks, there is no question that Culliver must be suspended if the NFL is serious about its claims to be taking on homophobia in its ranks. Thanks to players like Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendan Ayanbadejo and their pro-gay advocacy, we're seeing a shift among NFL players, but the leadership needs to take strong stand against Culliver's kind of bigotry if that shift is to continue.
'I don't do the gay guys, man,' Culliver told radio host Artie Lange. 'I don't do that. No.'
Asked whether there are any gay players on the 49ers, Culliver said, 'Nah. We don't got no gay people on the team. You know, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff.'
Incredulous, Lange pointed out that gay players might be able to play well, too, but Culliver responded, 'Nah. Nah. Can't be... can't... uh... be in the locker room.'

Matt Damon recently finished shooting for the upcoming movie Behind the Candelabra. In the movie Damon plays Scott Thorson, the long time partner of Liberace (Michael Douglas has been cast in the role of Liberace). Recently Damon sat down with Playboy Magazine for an interview on a variety of topics, including the relationship between Thorson and Liberace, having to kiss another man, gay rumors that have dogged Damon and Benn Affleck, and more.
On the relationship between Thorson and Liberace:
These two men were deeply in love and in a real relationship-a marriage-long before there was gay marriage. That’s not an insignificant thing. The script is beautiful and relatable. Their conversations when they’re dressing or undressing or having a spat or getting ready for bed? That’s every marriage. It feels like you’re witnessing something really intimate you would normally see with a man and a woman, but instead it’s two men, which was thrilling. There’s stuff I think will make people uncomfortable. Great. It’s HBO—they can change the channel.
On preparing for the role with Douglas:
We both have a lot of gay friends, and we were not going to screw this up or bulls**t it. It wasn’t the most natural thing in the world to do, though. Like, for one scene, I had to come out of a pool, go over to Michael, straddle him on a chaise lounge and start kissing him. And throughout the script, it’s not like I kiss him just once. We drew it up like a fo
