Google has marked the arrival of one of the great celestial displays, the Perseid Meteor Shower, with an animated Doodle on its homepage.
The Doodle when clicked shows a short film of meteors dashing through the night sky against a variety of backdrops.
The annual Perseid meteor shower - known as the 'fireball champion' of meteor showers - happens every August and is caused by the massive Swift-Tuttle comet losing parts of its celestial body as it enters the inner solar system.
The Perseid shower is so-called because they appear to come from the radiant which lies in the constellation Perseus.
Observation of the spectacle is ancient, with the earliest information on this meteor shower found in Chinese annals in A.D. 36.
The meteor shower is often referred to, particularly by Catholics as the 'tears of St. Lawrence', as 10 August is the date of that saint's martyrdom.
Given a dark, clear sky it is often common to see more than 100 of the meteors an hour during the second week in August.
This year the famous meteor shower was accompanied by the lunar phenomenon of a supermoon.

The Perseid meteor shower is linked to the comet Swift-Tuttle. Perseids have derived their name due to the radiant they appear to arrive from. This radiant is in the Perseus constellation - named after a character in Greek mythology. Belgian astronomer Adolphe Quetelet is credited with discovering this meteor shower in 1835.
This celestial event can be seen from mid-July each year, primarily in the northern hemisphere. The Perseid meteor shower is at its most prominent between August 9 and 14, which explains the timing of this doodle.
The Perseid meteor shower doodle was designed by Sophie Diao, who drew inspiration from 'travel and time-lapse footage documenting meteor showers'. In a short Q&A posted on Google's doodle archive, Diao says she was inspired by long drives, trips to national parks and space. Regarding her research for this doodle, Diao says, 'Most of my research involved watching actual tim

One critic described it as '[A]n ill-compounded mixture of romance and matter-of-fact. The style of his tale is in places disfigured by mad (rather than bad) English; and its catastrophe is hastily, weakly, and obscurely managed.'

Search engine giant Google on Wednesday celebrated American Graphic Designer Saul Bass's 93rd birthday with one of its most unique and innovative doodle featuring a video of his trademark designs in film credits and film posters.
The new doodle shows a sequence of Bass' best works in films with the tunes of jazz composer Dave Brubeck's 'Unsquare Dance' playing in the background.
In a career that spanned three decades, Bass worked with some of the best filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Perminger, BillyWider Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese.
Born on 8 May, 1920 in New York, Bass' artistic talent was evident since childhood. He attended the Arts Student League and worked as a freelance designer for several years. His breakthrough came in 1954 when he was assigned to design a film poster for Otto Preminger's 'Carmen Jones'. Bass' sophisticated composition in the black and white poster featuring Dorothy Dandridge in an eye-popping red skirt impressed the director so much that the designer went on to make the title sequence.
His dramatic designs added a whole new dimension to the industry and soon several filmmakers roped him in the design stages of production. Some of his best works were seen in 'The Man with Golden Arms', 'North by Northwest', 'Psycho' 'Vertigo' and 'Spartacus'. In the 1990s, he also created title sequences for &q

Google on Thursday marked John Wisden's 187th birthday with a doodle on its homepage.
John Wisden, born on September 5, 1826, in Brighton, was famous as an avid English cricketer and for writing Cricketers' Almanack (1864) or sometimes simply referred to as 'the Bible of Cricket'.
Wisden Cricketers' Almanack is considered to be one of the significant contributions to the sport and the world's widely famous sports reference book. It was first used in 1930s.
John Wisden, a first-class cricketer, played 187 matches for three English county cricket teams Sussex, Kent and Middlesex.
Wisden's passion towards cricket developed from his early days and at the age of 18 he made his debut for Sussex.
As a first class cricketer, he made his debut at the age of 19 for Sussex.
His cricketing abilities and knowledge was impressive and he was known as one of the best all-rounders of his days. Among his fellow sportsmen and fans he was popular as 'The Little Wonder'.
At the age of 57, Wisden died of cancer and he was buried in Brompton Cemetery, London.
To mark centenary of Wisden's death, a headstone was placed at his grave in 1984.
