Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while addressing a Congress rally in Mangalore in Karnataka, asked the ruling BJP government in Karnataka what have it done for the welfare of the people. She also slammed the BJP by saying that it never took any serious action to fight corruption.
“As you all know we have no control on the international prices of oil which have gone up from 40 dollars per barrels 10 years ago, to 140 dollars per barrel today. You know that we import 80% of crude oil from which we make petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas. We continue to subsidise kerosene which must be done. But we have been compelled and we have no option but to increase the prices of diesel and the cooking gas. In spite of these, UPA government is doing its best not to burden the people with more hardships. As we hold the responsibility as a Government at the Centre, the state government also has some responsibility. I want to ask the BJP government here why have not the government increase the limit of LPG cylinders to a family from 6 to 9. This is what our Congress government has done in the states ruled by us. Why has the Karnataka Government not reduced the VAT on diesel, just like our Congress led governments have done? So it is very easy to criticize others but what about you (the state government), what are you doing to reduce the hardships of your people? It is your (state government’s) responsibility as much as ours” said Sonia Gandhi.

My greetings to you all on the fourth anniversary of UPA-2 . This is an appropriate moment to celebrate. It is also an appropriate moment to reflect on what we have sought to do during this past nine years.

Our focus has never been in doubt and we have never deviated from our priorities. To strengthen our secular ethos, to address the needs of our people especially the weaker section , whether they are women or minority, schedule caste or schedule tribes or backwards. To pay special attention to farmers and workers and to strive for a growing dynamic economy that is both just and inclusive.

Sonia Gandhi at UPA-II 4th anniversary requests NDA to co-operate for passing crucial bills

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday hit back at main opposition party BJP for disrupting Parliament proceedings and preventing crucial legislations from being passed at the UPA-II's report card release on the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the coalition government at the Centre.
'I cannot hide my deep sense of disappointment at the way that Parliament has been prevented from functioning and fulfilling both its constitutional role and its democratic obligations. We deeply regret that in spite of our government's repeated offers for debate and discussion on all issues, the principal Opposition Party has thwarted the work and functioning of Parliament. We are disappointed that we have not been able to get crucial legislation enacted entirely because of this obstructionist approach' said Sonia Gandhi. 'We still have time to fulfill our duties to our people. I take this opportunity to make a fervent plea to the NDA and other Opposition Parties. Let us come together and collectively ensure the passage of the food security, land acquisition bills and other important bills. These are not partisan issues. It is not a question of the government versus the opposition. These bills affect the lives and livelihoods of millions whom we are committed to represent and benefit' added the Congress President.
