1827 में महान क्रांतिकारी मंगल पांडे का जन्म हुआ था। मंगल पांडे ने 1857 की क्रांति की नींव रखी थी। इनकी बग़ावत से ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी का शासन पूरी तरह हिल गया था। 1857 के विद्रोह की शुरूआत एक कारतूस की वजह से हुई थी। सिपाहियों को 1853 में एनफ़ील्ड बंदूक दी गई थीं, जिसमें जानवर की चर्बी से बना कारतूस इस्तेमाल होता था। जब इस बात का पता भारतीय सैनिकों को चला तो मंगल पण्डे ने कारतूस को इस्तेमाल करने से मना कर दिया। इस पर अंग्रेज अफ़सर ने उन्हें गिरफ्तार करने की कोशिश की। पलटन के सार्जेंट हडसन मंगल पांडे को पकड़ने के लिए जैसे ही आगे बढ़े तो पांडे ने उसे गोली मार दी और यहीं से ग़दर की शुरुआत हुई। इस जुर्म के लिए मंगल पांडे को फांसी की सज़ा सुनाई गई।
1900 में पेरिस में पहली मेट्रो रेल चली थी। मेट्रो पेरिस के शहरी इलाकों में चलने वाली तेज रेल सेवा थी। इसकी पहली लाइन का उद्घाटन 'एक्सपोजिशन यूनिवर्सेले' नाम के एक विश्व मेले के दौरान हुआ। 1914 में पहला विश्व युद्ध छिड़ने तक मेट्रो सेवा का काफी तेज़ी से विस्तार हुआ। 1930 तक पेरिस शहर के आसपास के इलाकों को भी इससे जोड़ दिया गया। 1945 तक मेट्रो रेलों का जाल पूरे क्षेत्र में बिछाया जा चुका था। इसके बाद से मेट्रो के विस्तार के बजाए ट्रेनों के नेटवर्क को तेज़ और सुविधाजनक बनाने पर काम होने लगा। 1960 के बाद से मेट्रो को पेरिस में चलने वाली छोटी दूरी की दूसरी ट्रेन सेवा 'आरईआर' के साथ जोड़ने की कोशिश होने लगी। आज भी पेरिस मेट्रो ज्यादातर दूरी ज़मीन के अंदर तय करती है। पेरिस मेट्रो का नेटवर्क 200 किलोमीटर से भी ज्यादा लंबा और 300 से भी ज्यादा स्टेशनों वाला है। मॉस्को के बाद यह यूरोप की दूसरी व्यस्त मेट्रो सेवा है।.

1950 में ब्रिटेन के तत्कालीन उपप्रधानमंत्री सर जेफ़री हाव ने अपने पद से इस्तीफ़ा दे दिया था। ब्रिटेन की तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री मारग्रेट थैचर को भेजे अपने इस्तीफ़े में उन्होंने कहा था कि प्रधानमंत्री की यूरोप संबंधी नीति के विरोध में वो इस्तीफ़ा दे रहे हैं। दरअसल, प्रधानमंत्री थैचर यूरोप की एकल मुद्रा के ख़िलाफ़ थीं। थैचर की यूरोप नीति के ख़िलाफ़ इस्तीफ़ा देनेवाले हाव कैबिनेट के चौथे सदस्य थे। 1979 में हाव थैचर की मूल कैबिनेट के आख़िरी सदस्य थे। उन्होंने चांसलर और विदेश मंत्री के पद पर काम किया था।
1953 में आंध्र प्रदेश का गठन हुआ था। आंध्र प्रदेश पहला राज्य था, जिसे मद्रास प्रांत से भाषाई आधार पर अलग कर नया राज्य बनाया गया था। 26 जनवरी 1950 को लागू हुए भारतीय संविधान में अंग्रेजी के साथ हिंदी को भारत की राज काज की भाषा बनाया गया। माना गया कि अगले 15 वर्ष में धीरे-धीरे अंग्रेजी का प्रभाव खत्म कर हिंदी ही राजकाज की भाषा होगी। यह तय होते ही दक्षिण भारत में हिंदी के खिलाफ शांत पड़े प्रदर्शन फिर शुरू हो गए। मद्रास में बड़ी संख्या में छात्र सड़कों पर उतर आए। इसके साथ ही भाषाई आधार पर राज्यों के गठन की मांग भी खड़ी हो गई। दक्षिण में नए राज्य के गठन की मांग को लेकर 53 दिनों तक आमरण अनशन पर बैठे पोट्टी श्रीमालू की मौत हो गई। श्रीमालू तेलुगू भाषियों के लिए तेलंगाना राज्य की मांग कर रहे थे, जिससे इलाके में भारी तनाव फैल गया था। इस घटना के बाद छात्रों का प्रदर्शन उग्र हो गया। इसके बाद 1 नवंबर 1953 को आंध्र प्रदेश को मद्रास से काटकर परिसीमित कर दिया गया, लेकिन इसके बावजूद हिंदी के खिलाफ दक्षिण भारत के नेताओं का विरोध जारी रहा।
