The Delhi government on Wednesday informed a Delhi court that it would take one month to decide on whether to grant sanction to prosecute former JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and others accused in the 2016 JNU sedition case. Home department of the Delhi government filed a reply in the Patiala House Court stating that the matter was under consideration and it can take around a month's time to take a decision on granting the sanction.

Former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar along nine other has been chargesheeted in the JNU sedition case as main accused. The charge sheet names 10 JNU students as main accused including Kanahiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya, and seven Kashmiri students, namely, Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Muneeb Hussain, Umar Gul, Rayeea Rasool, and Bashir Bhat. आज नौ फरवरी है...नौ फरवरी यानी पिछले साल आज ही के दिन जेएनयू चर्चा में आया था। कन्हैया कुमार और उमर खालिद समेत कई छात्रों पर देशद्रोह का मुकदमा दर्ज किया गया और इसी के साथ छात्रसंघ और विश्वविद्यालयों में एक ऐसे युग की शुरुआत हुई, जो देशद्रोह और राष्ट्रवाद में बंट गया। विश्वविद्यालय परिसर में राष्ट्रीय राजनीति दाखिल हो चुकी थी और इस मुद्दे को वहां से निकालकर दुनिया में फैला दिया। पिछले साल नौ फरवरी को संस्थान के छात्रों ने वर्ष 2001 के संसद हमले के दोषी अफजल गुरु को दी गयी फांसी के खिलाफ एक कथित तौर पर विरोध प्रदर्शन आयोजित किया था. इस दौरान कुछ अज्ञात छात्रों ने कथित रुप से भारत विरोधी नारेबाजी की. घटना के चार दिन बाद दिल्ली पुलिस ने जेएनयू छात्रसंघ के नेता कन्हैया कुमार को गिरफ्तार कर उनके खिलाफ देशद्रोह और आपराधिक साजिश का मामला दर्ज किया.
