Growing up, I never imagined a girl from a border town could one day become a governor.
But this is America

My parents taught me to never give up and to always believe that my future could be whatever I dreamt it to be.
Success, they taught me, is built on the foundation of courage, hard-work and individual responsibility.
Despite what some would have us believe, success is not built on resentment and fears.
We grew up on the border and truly lived paycheck to paycheck. My dad was a golden gloves boxer in the Marine Corps, then a deputy sheriff. My mom worked as an office assistant.
One day, they decided to start a security guard business. I thought they were absolutely crazy-we literally had no savings, but they always believed in the American Dream.
So, my dad worked to grow the business.
My mom did the books at night. And at 18, I guarded the parking lot at the Catholic Church bingos.
Now, my dad made sure I could take care of myself.
I carried a Smith and Wesson .357 Magnum — that gun weighed more than I did!
My parents grew that small business-from one 18-year-old guarding a bingo-to more than 125 people in three states.
And sure, there was help along the way. But my parents took the risk. They stood up. And y

If you don't live in New Mexico, you probably aren't familiar with Gov. Susana Martinez -- but Republican's are hoping that will soon change.
Martinez, 53, will be introducing vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan tonight -- a prime speaking slot for the newcomer to the scene.
Martinez is a triple threat for Republicans: She's female, she's Hispanic and she's a former Democrat. Her story is one that Republicans hope will resonate with Hispanic voters everywhere, and tonight is her big introduction onto the national stage.
Elected in 2010, Martinez is the nation's first Latina governor. She's popular in her state, with recent polling showing her approval rating above 50 percent.
With 6.7 percent unemployment, New Mexico boasts a rate lower than the national average and Martinez, herself, has the distinction of being a conservative governor in a state that tends to swing towards Democrats.
Unsurprisingly, Martinez was rumored to be a potential vice presidential running mate for Mitt Romney, but she vehemently denied wanting the position. She is the guardian for her disabled sister and moving her was not an option, Martinez said.
Martinez hasn't always agreed with Romney, but she's emphasized her support even when voicing disagreement.

In a sign of her rising stature within the Republican Party, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez took center stage Wednesday night at the Republican Convention in Tampa – speaking right before vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.
In her speech, an emotional Martinez attacked President Barack Obama for the U.S.’s growing national debt while calling for bi-partisan politics to solve America’s problems. Martinez, like her fellow Latino politicians Ted Cruz of Texas and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, began her convention speech by recalling her family’s blue-collar past.

Spain's Trap shooters Antonio Bailon (33) and Beatriz Martinez (31) barely missed the title at last month's ISSF World Championship Shotgun in Moscow. Now, a few weeks later, they finally climbed atop the Trap Mixed Team podium in New Delhi (IND), claiming the ISSF World Cup Final trophy by crushing 42 out of 50 targets.
After missing three of their first 15 targets, the two Spaniards crushed 27 of the following 28, definitely taking the lead and defending their position against the comeback of Italy's Giovanni Pellielo (47) and Jessica Rossi (25), who then finished in 2nd position with 40 hits out of 50 and the Silver medal around their neck.
'In Moscow we felt like we didn't win the Silver, but we lost the Gold,' said Martinez at the end of the medal ceremony. 'That's what they used to say in Spain after the World Championship.'
'It feels great, it's a liberation. We finally made it!' She concluded. 'We didn't train specifically for this final, it was our first time ever with this format.'
The Bronze medal was awarded to United States' Derek Haldeman (26) and Ashley Carroll (22), who doubled the result they nailed in Moscow, crushing 31 out of 40 targets and placing 3rd.
