Jim Durham, the veteran announcer who died over the weekend at his home near Tomball, was remembered Monday by colleagues as much for his kindness and good nature off the court as for the talents that brought him a career achievement award from the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame.
Durham, 65, lived on a farm in Rose Hill, located between Tomball and Waller, during the latter part of a lengthy career that included almost two decades (1973-91) as the voice of the Chicago Bulls.
“The voice of champions,” Michael Jordan said in a text message to ESPNChicago.com. “I will miss him.”
Durham spent 15 years as the lead NBA announcer on ESPN Radio alongside analyst Jack Ramsay. He also called Dallas Mavericks games from 1993 through 2001 and was part of the original Home Sports Entertainment broadcast team in the early 1980s. He also did several Rockets games on radio in the fall of 1992 when Gene Peterson was recovering from surgery.
“He was one of the nicest guys I’ve worked with and one of the handful that I respected, and he was a great broadcaster,” said Rockets announcer Bill Worrell, who worked with Durham at HSE.
“He loved working with the Bulls and with ‘Big Red,’ John Kerr, but then ESPN got him and put him on nationwide, and the rest of us got to love him, too. He and Jack Ramsay were great partners.”

Ex-Porn Star Stacie Halas wants her teaching job back
OXNARD, California - An Oxnard teacher who was fired after her past as a porn actress was discovered by students lost her legal bid to regain her job.
Stacie Halas, a science teacher at Richard B. Haydock Intermediate School, was fired by the school board last April on the grounds that her role in pornography disrupted the classroom environment.
Halas appealed her firing before the Commission on Professional Competence.
On Tuesday, her attorney Richard Schwab said a three-judge panel unanimously decided the 32-year old was unfit for the classroom.
During a hearing last fall, Schwab had argued that Halas did not star in pornographic movies while teaching in any district.
He said Halas acted in them during an eight-month period from 2005 to 2006 because of financial duress.
Nitasha Sawhney, one of two lawyers representing the school district, said Halas repeatedly lied to school administrators about her acting career at the same time students were viewing the explicit videos.
'This case is about whether the students of the Oxnard School District are required to incorporate into their learning environment the choice Ms. Halas made to be a porn star,' Sawhney said.

Their Danish-flagged ship was in the Bay of Biscay last week as hurricane-force winds battered the Atlantic coast of Europe. Amid waves of 30 feet and winds of 60 knots, the Svendborg began losing containers off northern France. After the ship arrived in the Spanish port of Malaga this week, Maersk discovered that about 520 containers were unaccounted for. Stacks of others had collapsed.
It's the biggest recorded loss of containers overboard in a single incident.
As repairs are made to the Svendborg in Malaga, Palle Laursen, Maersk's vice president of operations, says the company is examining its procedures 'to avoid similar incidents in the future.' The company told CNN that the extreme weather had an unexpectedly forceful impact on the ship's movements. It said 85% of the lost containers were empty and others included such dry goods as frozen meat. None contained dangerous goods. Maersk is now contacting customers to tell them that their shipments are at the bottom of the ocean.
