Nicki Minaj is set to appear as a judge on the next season of American Idol. The rapper and singer, who released her second album this year, is expected to join Mariah Carey on the hit TV series' judging panel.
While neither Minaj nor American Idol have confirmed the report, sources tell Us Weekly she has signed up for the show's 12th season. 'She is definitely doing it,' according to one insider. '[She is] 100% confirmed to judge,' said another.
Although American Idol was for years the top reality TV singing competition in the US, the show has struggled in the ratings. Facing competition from The Voice and Simon Cowell's The X Factor, which launched in the US last year, American Idol hired Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler for its latest season. Those singers helped crown Idol's 11th winner, singer-songwriter Phillip Phillips, but announced this summer that they would not return in 2013.
If history is any precedent, Carey and Minaj will have at least one more colleague on the American Idol panel. With rumours that longtime judge Randy Jackson will be moved to a mentoring role, Pharrell Williams, Pink and the youngest Jonas Brother, Nick, are all reportedly under consideration. Following a story in The Hollywood Reporter on Friday that Nicki Minaj was a strong candidate to join Mariah Carey behind the judges’ table on “American Idol,” Us Weekly reported that it’s a done deal.
Two sources told Us Weekly that Minaj will get the job, with an insider telling the magazine, “I’m not sure the deal is completely done yet, but yes, she is definitely doing it. If she does join the show, Minaj – born Onika Tanya Maraj – will sit alongside Carey on the panel, after the five-times Grammy-winning signer was announced as a judge last month.
The singer reportedly signed an $18 million deal to join the show, following the departures of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.
Carey said of her role: 'As a singer, songwriter and producer, it's going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back to American Idol.
'I'm currently in the studio working on my new album and its first single, 'Triumphant', which will be out early next month. I can't wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon.'
Nick Jonas is reportedly in the running to complete the line-up as original judge Randy Jackson is set to come off the panel and be given a job as a mentor to the contestants.

Although a report earlier today seemed to confirm that Nicki Minaj will be a judge on the next season of 'American Idol,' the YMCMB star has yet to give the final word. Still, fans already have their opinions on Nicki's potential new gig.
'This is cool!!' wrote MTV News reader William Osmar. 'I love you Nicki Minaj!!'
'Yes she should!!!! She is awesome!' added Arianna Parsons. 'Best female rapper! Bet she can beat you in a rapping contest!'
Fellow fan Chelsea Reyna summarized the news in four words (and one emoticon): 'This would be epic'
Not everyone is 100 percent sold on the idea, though. 'She's alright I guess,' Zac Olsen commented.
'Like her music, but I don't think she should be a judge,' Alekz Estrada added.
Andrea Kenyon was one of several 'Idol' fans who said they'd check out if Minaj joined the show. 'I hope not,' Kenyon said. 'I won't be watching anymore if she becomes a judge.'
A few fans who were less-than-excited about the news offered their own constructive suggestions for other artists the show should consider hiring over Minaj.
