Millions of smart meters are being installed across the world, including India. These meters shall gradually replace the traditional electricity meters. Smart meters use digital technology and have additional capabilities like data storage, retrieval, analytics and data transmission. They use wireless signals to send readings directly to the energy supplier and at the same time they give useful information to the customer. For the customer, there could be an additional In‐Home Display, supported by the smart meter, which tells how much energy is being used in real time and at what cost.

For suppliers of energy, these meters can create enormous insights as to who is using electricity at what load and at what cost and at what time.Based on real time big data generated by the smart meters, producers of electricity can utilize their plants in optimal ways and can also come up with innovative “energy supply solutions”.Smart meters are in fact going to change the way the world uses and supplies electricity.
