The West Bengal state cabinet cleared the proposal for changing the state's name. The new name is likely to be 'Banga' or 'Bangla' in Bengali and 'Bengal' in English. Sources in the cabinet reveal that a special session of the Bengal Legislative Assembly will commence on August 26 for the clearance of the proposal ahead of it being sent for consideration to the Parliament.If the Parliament clears the proposal of the name change, it will raise the state from the 28th position alphabetically to the 4th position.

If Special Assembly meeting on August 29 and 30 passes the proposal brought by Trinamool Congress led West Bengal state government then soon West Bengal will be known as Bengal in English and Bangla or Banga in Bengali. This has been the demand of Trinamool supremo and Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee ever since she had come to power in the state. Senior bureaucrats and politicians had often complained that their turn comes at the end when they attend high-level meetings in Delhi where representatives were called in accordance with the alphabetical order of their states. Incrementally, name of Calcutta was changed to Kolkata in January 2001 by then state chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee led Left Front government. Special Assembly meeting will take a decision .
