നിലവില്‍ രണ്ട് റോബോട്ടിക്ക് പര്യവേക്ഷണ വാഹനങ്ങള്‍ ചൊവ്വയിലുണ്ട്.
മനുഷ്യനെ അയച്ചുകൊണ്ടുള്ള പദ്ധകള്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ടി വരുന്ന ചിലവാണ് ആന്‍ഡേഴ്‌സിന്റെ എതിര്‍പ്പിന് കാരണം. ഇപ്പോള്‍ നടന്നുവരുന്ന യന്ത്ര നിയന്ത്രിത സംവിധാനങ്ങള്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള പര്യവേക്ഷണ പദ്ധതികളെ അദ്ദേഹം അനുകൂലിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതിന് താരതമ്യേന ചിലവ് കുറവാണെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നു. നമ്മളെ ചൊവ്വയിലേക്ക് ആകര്‍ഷിക്കുന്നത് എന്താണ്? അതിന്റെ അനിവാര്യതയെന്താണ്? ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഇതില്‍ താല്‍പര്യമുണ്ടെന്ന് എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നില്ല. ആന്‍ഡേഴ്‌സ് പറഞ്ഞു.
1968 ല്‍ അമേരിക്കയുടെ അപ്പോളോ 8 പദ്ധതിയുടെ ഭാഗമായുള്ള ലൂണാര്‍ മോഡ്യൂള്‍ പൈലറ്റ് ആയിരുന്നു 85 കാരനായ ബില്‍ ആന്‍ഡേഴ്‌സ്. ഭൂമിയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് പത്ത് തവണയാണ് ലൂണാര്‍ മോഡ്യൂള്‍ ചന്ദ്രനെ വലംവെച്ചത്.
അക്കാലത്ത് ഭൂമിയില്‍ നിന്നും ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ ദൂരം സഞ്ചരിച്ച പദ്ധതിയായിരുന്നു അത്.
