“As you all know we have no control on the international prices of oil which have gone up from 40 dollars per barrels 10 years ago, to 140 dollars per barrel today. You know that we import 80% of crude oil from which we make petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas. We continue to subsidise kerosene which must be done. But we have been compelled and we have no option but to increase the prices of diesel and the cooking gas. In spite of these, UPA government is doing its best not to burden the people with more hardships. As we hold the responsibility as a Government at the Centre, the state government also has some responsibility. I want to ask the BJP government here why have not the government increase the limit of LPG cylinders to a family from 6 to 9. This is what our Congress government has done in the states ruled by us. Why has the Karnataka Government not reduced the VAT on diesel, just like our Congress led governments have done? So it is very easy to criticize others but what about you (the state government), what are you doing to reduce the hardships of your people? It is your (state government’s) responsibility as much as ours†said Sonia Gandhi.

The death of eminent poet-lyricist Vaali was mourned by the State’s political leaders and the Tamil film industry on Thursday. Expressing shock at the news of his demise, Governor K. Rosaiah said the great legend’s lyrics touched everyone’s heart and conveyed a message. MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, said Vaali had penned more than 10,000 songs, including some popular ones in MGR films, and his death was a great loss. Union shipping minister, G.K. Vasan, said Vaali’s songs were cherished by people from all walks of life. A recipient of various national and State honours, Vaali conveyed many social issues through his songs. He carved a niche for himself in the industry, Mr. Vasan said. DMDK leader, Vijayakant, recalled Vaali’s contributions in some of his films. He said the lyricist tried to bring about socio-economic changes in society through his songs.
Madhan Karky, lyricist and son of veteran lyricist Vairamuthu said: “Vaali had keen awareness of current events and often his songs had social narrative. Even in one of his last songs, for ‘Ethirneechal’, he penned the lyrics ‘Minvettu naalil ingu minsaaram pola vandhaaye’. His sense of humour and simplicity were inspiring.”
Chitralaya Gopu, director-script writer, said: “He was a devout Vaishnavite, an aspect only those very close to him knew about, and was forever in love with his hometown, Srirangam. A very active mind, he often reeled out entire songs after just listening to a minute or two o
