ഗ്രേറ്റ് റെഡ് സ്‌പോട്ട് എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ പ്രതിഭാസം നിലയ്ക്കാതെ തുടരുന്നതിന്റെ കാരണം ഇതുവരെ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞര്‍ക്ക് മനസ്സിലായിട്ടില്ല. രണ്ടു വര്‍ഷമായി വ്യാഴത്തെ വലംവയ്ക്കുന്ന നാസയുടെ ജൂണോ ബഹിരാകാശപേടകത്തില്‍ നിന്നും നിര്‍ണായകമായ വിവരങ്ങളാണ് ഇപ്പോള്‍ ലഭിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. അതിലൊന്ന് വ്യാഴത്തിന്റെ ഉപരിതലത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ഈ ഭീമന്‍ വാതകച്ചുഴിയ്ക്ക് 217 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ആഴമുണ്ടെന്നതാണ്.
അമേരിക്കന്‍ ജിയോഫിസിക്കല്‍ യൂണിയന്റെ വാര്‍ഷികയോഗത്തിലാണ് നിര്‍ണായകവിവരങ്ങള്‍ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത്.

ഡോണ്‍ അയച്ചു തന്ന തന്ന ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ ആകാശഗംഗയുടെ ചരിത്രവും പരിണാമവും മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നതില്‍ നിര്‍ണ്ണായക പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചെന്നും നാസ പറഞ്ഞു.
