At the start of day 6, group B of the Women's draw looked delicately poised with the top 4 teams all equal on 4 points. The early match of day 6 pitted two of these rivals against one another with the chance to go top of the table - China v United States.
It was United States who looked to gain the early advantage and their attacking intent was rewarded with two early goals. The first came inside the first five minutes after a brilliant individual run by Gonzalez who fed the ball in to Katie O'Donnell who in turn finished high into the net. It took just five more minutes for the second goal to come, with another bit of individual skill from the Americans unlocking the Chinese defence, this time Michelle Vitesse making space for the shot at the edge of the box and firing impressively from range. The Americans weren't finished there though and to cap off a fine first half performance, 5 minutes before the end of the half the Americans scored a lovely counter attacking goal, Selenski leading the break-away and firing across goal into Katie O'Donnell who couldn't miss from a yard out.
The second half saw the Americans pile on the pressure with wave after wave of attacks, but it took 20 minutes before they made the pressure tell - Rachael Dawson's powerful effort getting the faintest of touches from O'Donnell on the way in to give her a hattrick and the Americans an unassailable lead. The rout was complete when Kolo.
