Arizona's Legislature has passed a controversial bill that would allow business owners, as long as they assert their religious beliefs, to deny service to gay and lesbian customers.
The bill, which the state House of Representatives passed by a 33-27 vote Thursday, now goes to Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican and onetime small business owner who vetoed similar legislation last year but has expressed the right of business owners to deny service.
'I think anybody that owns a business can choose who they work with or who they don't work with,' Brewer told CNN in Washington on Friday. 'But I don't know that it needs to be statutory. In my life and in my businesses, if I don't want to do business or if I don't want to deal with a particular company or person or whatever, I'm not interested. That's America. That's freedom.'
As expected, the measure has drawn criticism from Democrats and business groups who said it would sanction discrimination and open the state to the risk of damaging litigation.
On Friday, the LGBT group Wingspan staged a protest march to the governor's office that drew about 200 people. Some carried signs with messages 'God created us all equal' and 'Shame on Arizona.'
Tucson-based Rocco's Little Chicago Pizzeria posted a photo on its Facebook page of a sign with a message for state lawmakers: 'We reserve the right to refuse service to A.

A 49ers gay ad has been pulled after two team members deny participating in it. On Feb. 1, Yahoo! Sports reported that the 'It Gets Better' video that was made as part of an anti-bullying campaign is no longer online.
'Movement co-founder Dan Savage made the decision to pull the video after linebacker Ahmad Brooks and tackle Isaac Sopoaga strangely denied their involvement with 'It Gets Better' when asked about it by Kevin Manahan of USA Today on Thursday afternoon. After being shown the video, the players then claimed ignorance of the ad's intentions and refused comment,' Yahoo! Sports reported.
The 49ers gay ad marked the first time that an NFL team filmed such a spot. It is unknown why 'It Gets Better' decided to pull the video, which seemed like it would do more good than not, regardless of Brooks and Sopoaga's comments. Many are surprised that the guys were even asked about the ad, given the fact that they have to play football this weekend. That doesn't make what they said right -- or wrong.
Naturally, the timing of this story is suspicious, given the fact that the 49ers will play in Sunday's Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens.
The 49ers gay ad was 'designed to encourage hope and acceptance among gay teens who are being bullied.'

San Francisco 49er Chris Culliver selfishly shot off his mouth yesterday, igniting a firestorm of controversy and creating a nightmare for his team and the National Football League as they head to the Super Bowl. For that alone the NFL should suspend him, his comments having put his entire team at the center of an unnecessary controversy as they're trying to focus on the game.
But for the horrendously bigoted, anti-gay content of his remarks, there is no question that Culliver must be suspended if the NFL is serious about its claims to be taking on homophobia in its ranks. Thanks to players like Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendan Ayanbadejo and their pro-gay advocacy, we're seeing a shift among NFL players, but the leadership needs to take strong stand against Culliver's kind of bigotry if that shift is to continue.
'I don't do the gay guys, man,' Culliver told radio host Artie Lange. 'I don't do that. No.'
Asked whether there are any gay players on the 49ers, Culliver said, 'Nah. We don't got no gay people on the team. You know, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff.'
Incredulous, Lange pointed out that gay players might be able to play well, too, but Culliver responded, 'Nah. Nah. Can't be... can't... uh... be in the locker room.'

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed into law Monday a bill that criminalizes homosexuality.
Museveni had gone back and forth about the controversial bill.
Last month, Museveni said he wouldn't sign the bill, describing homosexuals as 'sick' people who needed help, not imprisonment.
Then he backtracked this month and said he'd sign it because scientists had determined that there's no gene for homosexuality and it was merely abnormal behavior.
Then, last week, he said he would seek advice from American scientists before he made any decision.
Homosexual acts are illegal in Uganda. The law toughens the penalties, including life imprisonment for certain acts.
Museveni said that Ugandan scientists had determined there was no gene for homosexuality.
'It was learned and could be unlearned,' he said.
Shortly after his announcement, U.S. President Barack Obama warned that enacting the bill would affect relations between the two nations. He described the proposal as an 'affront and a danger to the gay community' in Uganda.
The United States and Britain are among the nation's largest donors.
Placating Western donors
Then, in what appeared to be a move to placate Western donors, Museveni said he would seek extended guidance.
In a statement last week, he said U.S. scientists sent him opinions indicating 'homosexuality could be congenital.'
