In his 100th International match, Sunil Chhetri scored a brace to lead India to a 3-0 win over Kenya in India’s second match of the Hero Intercontinental Cup at the Andheri Sports Complex in Mumbai, Maharashtra today (June 04, 2018).
Skipper Chhetri’s penalty strike in the 68th minute and a peach of a goal in added extra time alongwith Jeje Lalpekhlua’s 71st minute strike enabled India to outmanoeuvre Kenya in a tough contest.
The thunderous outpour of rain at the Andheri Sports Complex made life difficult for both the teams and both adjusted to playing on a wet surface in the opening minutes, with neither taking the risk of attacking.
A freekick for India went directly into the gloves of the Kenyan custodian whilst on the other end, although Kenya pumped bodies into the Indian defending half, were unable to create a clear scoring opportunity infront of goal. With Kenya, attacking from distance and accumulating corner’s to test India’s pedigree in set pieces, the defensive line of Sandesh Jhingan and Anas thwarted any dangerous chances for the opposition..

Chinese Taipei coach Gary White mentioned that his “youngsters will look up to Sunil Chhetri someday.”
Speaking at the official post-match press conference White stated: “He showed to my young players how to deal with a senior level at the senior level. My players will definitely utilise the experience in a positive manner. Congratulations to Sunil for his wonderful career and the goals. The youngsters from my team will certainly look up to him someday.”
Referring to Chinese Taipei fielding a young squad, White maintained the “experience” will help them in the long run.
“Everything went right for us in terms of future. We had six U-23 players and two U-19 players on the pitch. In addition, we had four players who made their debut,” Chinese Taipei coach Gary White said at the official post-match press conference. “This was a learning experience for us. We will try to fix. Unless you try these players you never know,” he added.
National Coach Stephen Constantine said the “boys gave everything they had.”
I am obviously delighted to have won the game and congratulations to Sunil. He is capable of turning a game anytime. He could have scored five. But we take the three. He has been fantastic during my time here,” he pronounced.

“I had a dream but never dreamt of playing 100 International matches. This is unbelievable,” National Team captain Sunil Chhetri said prior to Team India’s practice session at the Mumbai Football Arena on Sunday (June 3, 2018).
“Honestly, I never think much about milestones. It was only when I was having a chat with my mom the other night that she became a bit emotional. How big it was for her made me realise how big the occasion is,” he stated.
“I need to thank my parents, friends, family, all my coaches, players, fans, media for their support in my journey in being able to be the second person in history play 100 International matches for my country. It feels special,” he added. “I just feel I will be able to keep my emotions under control, play the game as we should, stick to the plan and try to win the game for the country.”
Chhetri’s is the 2nd Indian after his ‘mentor’ Bhaichung Bhutia to achieve the feat.
Referring to his ‘mentor’ Bhutia’s accolades for Chhetri evolving as a player, the ‘disciple’ said that “as players grow older they start filtering stuff.”

Sunil Chhetri (born 3 August 1984) is an Indian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Indian club Bengaluru FC and the Indian national team. He is both the most-capped player,[2][3] and all-time top goalscorer for the India national team, with 56 goals[3] in 97 appearances.[4] He is also the current captain of the national team.
Chhetri began his professional career at Mohun Bagan in 2002.[5][6] He then moved to JCT where he scored 21 goals in 48 games, the most he has scored for any side in his career.[7] He signed for the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer in 2010, becoming the third player from the subcontinent of note to go abroad.[8] However, that stint in the United States did not last long and soon he was back in India's I-League where he played for Chirag United and Mohun Bagan before going back abroad.
