The American soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians, most of them children, had been trained as a sniper and recently suffered a head injury in Iraq, U.S. officials said Monday.
The name of the suspect, a married, 38-year-old father of two, has not been released.
U.S. Secretary of Defence Leon Panetta said the soldier may face capital charges, and that the U.S. must resist pressure from Washington and Kabul to change course in Afghanistan because of anti-American outrage over the shooting.
'We seem to get tested almost every other day with challenges that test our leadership and our commitment to the mission that we're involved in,' Panetta told reporters travelling with him to Krygzystan. 'War is hell.'
A U.S. official said that during a recent tour of duty in Iraq, the suspect suffered a head injury in a traffic accident. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter is under investigation. The vehicle accident was not a combat-related event, the official said.
There was no available indication about the extent of the injury, or whether his injury could be linked to any abnormal behaviour afterward.
Two U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity said the suspect had been trained as a sniper.

Military sources late Friday identified Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales as the name of the 38-year-old suspect accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians in a Sunday rampage. Bales has not yet been charged in the case. He was flown to the U.S. military maximum security prison at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas from Kuwait Friday.
'I can confirm' the name of the suspect is Robert Bales, a U.S. official told Yahoo News on condition of anonymity.
Bales' Seattle-area celebrity lawyer, John Henry Browne, said Friday that his client is in shock.
'He is in shock, kind of like a deer in headlights at the moment,' Browne said Friday morning, a local station near Joint Base Lewis-McChord King 5 News, reported. 'I told him not to talk about the allegations at all, so I cannot tell you how he is responding because I told him not to talk about it.'
Browne earlier told reporters at a news conference Thursday that the decorated soldier wasn't happy that he had been deployed a fourth time despite sustaining two injuries, including a traumatic head injury and the partial loss of his foot in Iraq. Browne dismissed rumors that the soldier had marital troubles, and said he had two young children.
He did not want to deploy,' Browne told the Seattle Times. 'In fact he was told he was not going to go. Then, really almost overnight, that changed.' Browne told the paper that a soldier in his uni

The US soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians in a massacre that has undermined relations with Kabul has been named as Staff Sgt Robert Bales.
Senior US officials told the BBC the name of the suspect as he was heading back to the US to face charges.
He is being flown to Fort Leavenworth, in Kansas, from Kuwait.
His lawyer, John Henry Browne, said on Thursday that the suspect was a 38-year-old man who had been injured twice while serving in Iraq.
He also said the accused had witnessed his friend's leg blown off the day before the killings.
That incident has not been confirmed by the US Army.
The Taliban called off peace talks in the wake of Sunday's deadly rampage - in which men, women and children were shot and killed at close range.
The US has stressed it remained committed to Afghan reconciliation.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has also reacted angrily to the killings. He told the US it must pull back its troops from village areas and allow Afghan security forces to take the lead in an effort to reduce civilian deaths.
On Friday he said the US was not fully co-operating with a probe into the killings.

The alleged shooter in the massacre of 16 Afghan civilians has been identified as U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales. The U.S. investigation has revealed that Bales had been drinking and that his actions seem methodical and deliberate, reports David Martin.
WASHINGTON - U.S. officials Friday identified the soldier accused of killing 16 civilians, including women and children, in Afghanistan as Army Staff sergeant Robert Bales.
Media reports Friday cited U.S. officials, whose names were not reported, as saying Bales, 38, was flown from Kuwait to a U.S. military detention center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai told the families of the people killed by the U.S. soldier he distrusts the U.S. military's version of what happened.
Karzai said the killing spree has pushed U.S.-Afghan relations to 'the end of the rope,' CNN reported. He said U.S. officials appeared to be withholding information.
Bales reportedly left an outpost in Kandahar province, Camp Belambay, and shot nine children, three women and four men in nearby villages Sunday.
'We tried to talk to the soldier involved, but there was no cooperation from America,' Karzai told the families. 'Based on what you are saying, the killer was not just one person.'
Karzai said Afghan investigators are suspicious of U.S. video footage captured by security cameras, CNN said.
Bales has been described as a deco
