A 20-year-old Boston University sophomore and a self-described 'cellist-nerd' brought the Miss Universe crown back to the United States for the first time in more than a decade when she won the televised contest Wednesday.
Olivia Culpo beat out 88 other beauty queens from six continents at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip to take the title from outgoing champion Leila Lopes of Angola.
Culpo wore a tight navy blue mini-dress with a sequined bodice as she walked on stage for the competition's opening number. Later in the night, she strutted in a purple and blue bikini, and donned a wintery red velvet gown with a plunging neckline.
Culpo's coronation ends a long losing spell for the U.S. in the competition co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC. An American had not won the Miss Universe title since Brook Lee won in 1997.
No one seemed more surprised than Culpo's family, who 'looked at her like she had three heads' when told them she was entering the Miss Rhode Island contest last year, her father Peter recalled.
'We didn't know a thing about pageants,' he said.
She won that contest in a rented $20 dress with a hole in it and then began working out, dieting, and studying current events on flashcards to compete for the Miss USA crown.

Jenna Talackova, 23, had complained after being disqualified from the contest, which chooses Canada's candidate for the Miss Universe Competition -- co-owned by Trump -- because she used to be male.
In an about-face announced hours before she appeared with her celebrity lawyer in Los Angeles to protest about discrimination, the Miss Universe Organisation said it could allow her to take part.
But it said she must meet 'the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada and the standards established by other international competitions.'
Talackova was not happy with that wording, calling on real estate tycoon Trump, who co-owns the Miss Universe organisation with NBC Universal, to step in to ensure that she can take part whatever Canadian authorities say.
'I am a woman. I was devastated .. I have never asked for any special consideration, I only wanted to compete. I saw the statement by Mr Trump's representative and I found it quite confusing,' she said.
'I wish Mr Trump would just say in plain words whether or not I would be allowed to compete and, if I win, whether I will be allowed to represent Canada in the Miss Universe competition.'
Despite being born with male genitals, Talackova said in a 2010 interview that she knew she was a woman from a young age, began hormone therapy at 14, and had surgery to change her gender when she was 19.

Transgender beauty queen Jenna Talackova, has asked Donald Trump to eliminate the rule that Miss Universe contestants must be 'natural born' females. Her attorney said: 'It isn't just about competing. It's about the elimination of the rule for others.'
Talackova, during a press conference on Tuesday, said: 'I want Mr. Trump to state that this rule will be eliminated because I do not want any other woman to suffer from the discrimination that I have endured.' She added: 'I have never asked for special consideration. I only wanted to compete.'
Digital Journal reports that the transgender beauty queen was disqualified from 2012 Miss Universe Canada contest because she was not 'natural born' female. According to Digital Journal, Talackova said she began hormone therapy at the age of 14. She said she had a sexual reassignment surgery at 19.
MSNBC said Talackova, in a statement read by her attorney, Allred, criticized Trump, saying that her gender at birth should not be an issue. According to the Allred: 'Jenna entered this competition and gave the pageant her time, her best efforts and her money. She did not think for one moment that what she might have looked like at birth would be relevant. She did not ask Mr. Trump to prove that he is a naturally-born man, or to see the photos of his birth, to view his anatomy, to prove that he was male. It made no difference to her.
