മഹാരാഷ്ട്രയിലെ മുംബൈ തുറമുഖത്തിനടുത്തായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ദ്വീപാണ് എലഫന്റ്.ലോക പൈതൃക പട്ടികയിലിടം നേടിയ എലിഫന്റ് ഗുഹ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്ന പ്രദേശമാണിത്.7.5 കിലോമീറ്ററോളം ദൂരം കടലിനടിയിലൂടെ കേബിള്‍ വലിച്ചാണ് വൈദ്യുതി എത്തിച്ചത്.
15 മാസം കൊണ്ട് വൈദ്യുതിവത്കരിച്ച പദ്ധതിക്കായി 25 കോടിയാണ് സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ മുടക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്

ഇന്ത്യയിലെ മഹാരാഷ്ട്രയിൽ മുംബൈ തുറമുഖത്തിനടുത്തായി അറബിക്കടലിലുള്ള ദ്വീപസമൂഹങ്ങളിൽപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ദ്വീപാണ് എലിഫന്റ ദ്വീപ് .ഖരാപുരി ദ്വീപ്, പൊറി ഐലന്റ് എന്നീ പേരുകളിലും ഈ ദ്വീപ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. മുംബൈയുടെ കിഴക്കു ഭാഗത്തായാണ് ഈ ദ്വീപ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
പാറകളിൽ കൊത്തുപണികളുള്ള ഗുഹാക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും എലിഫന്റ ഗുഹകളും ഈ ദ്വീപിനെ ജനങ്ങളുെട ഇഷ്ട വിനോദ സഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാക്കുന്നു. 1987-ൽ യുനെസ്കോ ലോകപൈതൃകസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലൊന്നായി ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയ എലിഫന്റാ ഗുഹകളിൽ അർധനാരീശ്വര പ്രതിമ, കല്യാണസുന്ദര ശിവൻ, കൈലാസം ഉയർത്തുന്ന രാവണൻ, അണ്ഡകാരമൂർത്തി, നടരാജൻ എന്നീ ശില്പങ്ങളാൽ വളരെ ആകർഷകമാണ്. ഒമ്പതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുമുതൽ പതിമൂന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുവരെ ഭരണം നടത്തിയിരുന്ന സിൽഹാര വംശജരുടെ കാലത്താണ് ഇതിലെ ശില്പങ്ങളിലധികവും പണികഴിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. എന്നാൽ ചില കൽപ്രതിമകൾ ഏഴാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുമുതൽ പത്താം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുവരെ ഭരണം രാഷ്ട്രകൂടവംശജരുടെ കാലത്തുമായും പണികഴിഞ്ഞവയാണ്.മുംബൈയിലെ ഫെറിയിൽ നിന്നും എളുപ്പത്തിൽ ഈ ദ്വീപിലേക്കെത്താവുന്നതാണ്. ഫെറിയിൽ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 10 കിലോമീറ്റർ (6.2 mi) യാത്രചെയ്താൽ ദ്വീപ് പട്ടണത്തിന്റെ തെക്കു-കിഴക്കേ തീരത്തെത്താം. ബോട്ടുകൾ leave daily from the ഗേറ്റ്‌വേ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ യിൽ നിന്നും ദിവസേനയുള്ള ബോട്ടുകളിൽ ഒരു മണിക്കൂർ സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ എലഫന്റ ദ്വീപിൽ എത്തിചേരാവുന്നതാണ്. പുരാതനകാലങ്ങളിൽ ഖരാപുരി എന്നായിരുന്നു ഈ ദ്വീപ് റിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ദ്വീപ് സന്ദർശിച്ച പോർച്ചുഗീസ് പര്യവേക്ഷകർ ആണ് ഈ ദ്വീപിന് എലഫന്റ ദ്വീപ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടത്. എലഫന്റാ ദ്വീപ് ഈന്തപ്പന, മാങ്ങ, പുളി എന്നീ മരങ്ങളുൾപ്പെട്ട കനത്ത കാടാണ്.ഷെൻബന്തർ, മൊറാബന്തർ, രാജ്ബന്തർ എന്നിങ്ങനെ മൂന്ന് ഗ്രാമങ്ങൾ ആണ് ഈ ദ്വീപിലുള്ളത്
