Fines for traffic rule violations can be paid in real time through e-challans in the city.

Through the system, the police will create a centralised data bank of all vehicles, details of their registered owners and driving licences. The traffic cops on beat duty will be provided with tablet-like gadgets with a special police software. This software will allow the cops in field access to the data and when a traffic violator is nabbed, the cops will verify the credentials of the driver, vehicle and its owner at the same time and generate a challan immediately.

The violators can then log on to website and will be able to pay the fine online. So gone will be the days when a traffic violator had to wait for days on end to get back his driving licence.

However, with the new online system in place, the documents will be verified at the time of issuing of the challan itself. The online payment of fine too can be done according to the convenience of the driver. However, the confiscated documents will still have to be collected from the court.
