A brown recluse spider bite nearly cost a 21-year-old student in the U.S. her eyesight.
Nikki Perez, a student at Texas Christian University, spent days in the hospital after she was bitten by a brown recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa) in September. She described how she lost part of an ear and nearly her eye sight to the venomous arachnid.
'It was terrifying,' she told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.
Perez was waiting at the Amarillo airport with her boyfriend Eric and his mom, when she suddenly felt a sharp sting on the back of her neck.
'I felt a nasty pinch when I touched my neck,' she said. 'Next, I felt something crawling over my face and over my eye. I yelled for Eric to help me, and when he saw the spider crawling over my face, he swatted it to the floor, and stamped on it.'
She then wrapped the organism, which had a violin-shaped mark on its back, up in tissues and put it in her handbag to show doctors.
Doctors couldn't do much for Perez, whose neck had started to burn, until she showed signs of necrosis, or dying skin cells.
'They gave me some steroids and told me to keep an eye on it, but as soon as I got in the car, I could feel that my entire head was starting to swell up,' she said.
She took pictures of herself as the affected area grew and took over a larger portion of her ear.

Certaines personnes n'ont aucune sequelle apres ce genre de morsure, mais la plupart du temps, les morsures sont tres douloureuses, surtout si elles ne sont pas traitees a temps (pour bien faire, le traitement doit intervenir au plus tard dans les deux jours qui suivent la morsure, idealement dans les 24 heures).
Le venin de cette araignee provoque la necrose des tissus touches. La grande majorite des morsures de Loxosceles reclusa peut provoquer de grosses infections suivies de longues periodes de cicatrisation qui laissent de severes cicatrices sur la peau. Dans de tres rares cas, la douleur peut provoquer des vomissements, des nausees, de la fievre, des paralysies partielles, etc.
Dans d'autres cas, generalement pour les enfants ou les gens en mauvaise condition physique, une morsure peut entrainer des sequelles physiques graves.

The brown recluse spider or violin spider, Loxosceles reclusa, Sicariidae (formerly placed in a family 'Loxoscelidae') is a spider with venomous bite.
Brown recluse spiders are usually between 6-20 mm, but may grow larger. While typically light to medium brown, they range in color from cream-colored to dark brown or blackish gray. The cephalothorax and abdomen may not necessarily be the same color. These spiders usually have markings on the dorsal side of their cephalothorax, with a black line coming from it that looks like a violin with the neck of the violin pointing to the rear of the spider, resulting in the nicknames fiddleback spider, brown fiddler or violin spider.
Loxosceles reclusa; the Brown Recluse Spider is one nasty arachnid to avoid. Its venom contains the potent tissue-destroying dermonecrotic agent, sphingomyelinase.
