Biju Janata Dal's Rita Sahu won the Bijepur assembly bypoll on Wednesday with a margin of close to 42,000 votes over the nearest candidate from BJP.
After 21 rounds of counting, Sahu polled 1,02,871 votes while BJP's Ashok Panigrahy was a distant second at 60,938 votes. Congress candidate Pranay Sahu was relegated to an also ran and secured 10,274 votes.
Hailing his party candidate’s victory, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the outcome of the polls would have an impact on the general elections in 2019.
The BJD won a staggering 56 per cent of the polled votes, while the BJP won 33.53 per cent and the Congress a mere 5.65 per cent, said Mr Majhi.
The Bijepur result assumes significance, particularly for the BJD, BJP and the Congress as it is seen as a precursor to the 2019 general elections.
The results proved that the popularity of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik remains intact despite an aggressive campaign by the BJP, which failed to capitalise on its advantages from the panchayat polls..

The already high-pitched Bijepur bypoll took an ugly turn on with slippers being hurled at Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday evening.
The CM was the star campaigner for a bypoll scheduled on February 24 that has consumed the state and its political parties. The attack on the CM, who was to spend the night in the western Odisha district, took place at the third of his rallies at Kumbhari in Barpalli.
The first slipper hit one of his personal security officers standing right behind him who quickly warded off the second slipper The attack is being attributed to a supporter of the BJP, Karthik Meher. The man who was roughed up later refused to disclose his “inspiration” until he has eaten “bhat” or rice. BJP has denied that the man had anything to do with them.
The assembly bypolls for which half of ruling BJD’s MLAs and MPs have been campaigning since the beginning of February is being fought tooth and nail by both parties. It is a seat that the Indian National Congress had won thrice, in a western Odisha district that BJP did extremely well in during the last panchayat polls, and one that Patnaik’s BJD, in its fourth term, cannot afford to lose.

BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Development of Bijepur is my responsibility. Naveen Patnaik, as usual, was calm and confident at the meeting and during a six-km road show at Barpali and Kumbhari. “The self-confidence of Rita has influenced me. I will be with her personally for the development the entire constituency during this one-year period before the general elections 2019,” said at a meeting held at Badgan village.
Patnaik called Rita as his “sister” for a number of times and assured people for an all-round development of the constituency since a lady is determined to fulfil her late husband’s dream. “Development of Bijepur is my responsibility now since I have given words to Rita,” said he.
Rita Sahu, wife of deceased MLA Subal Sahu was seen crying on the stage throughout the meeting addressed by Patnaik. She even couldn’t stop crying while delivering her short speech appealing to voters to support her for attaining the unfulfilled dream of her husband for development of Bijepur. Her posture was heart-touching.
At the outset, CM Patnaik recalled the sacrifice of the freedom fighters of Barpali like Bhagirathi Patnaik and termed the place as a great pilgrimage of the freedom movement.
From Barpali, he proceeded to Kumbhari village to address another meeting. Kumbari bears much importance as it is one of the largest villages of the State and itself a full-fledged gram panchayat.

With counting of votes for the Bijepur bypoll almost in its concluding phase, BJD continues to maintain a healthy lead over its nearest rival BJP. Congress seems to be the biggest loser as per the latest counting trends.

Show of strength by the BJD, party candidate Rita Sahu today filed her nomination papers for the by-election to the Bijepur Assembly constituency scheduled on February 24.
Rita filed her papers, in presence of senior BJD leaders, at the sub-collector office in Padampur.
