ജൈനമതത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട തീര്‍ഥസ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നാണ് ഗലൂരുവില്‍ ശ്രാവണബലഗോളയിലെ ഗോമതേശ്വര ബാഹുബലിയുടെ ഒറ്റക്കല്‍ പ്രതിമ. ഒറ്റക്കല്ലില്‍ തീര്‍ത്തിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പ്രതിമ അരിഷ്ടനേമി എന്ന ശില്‍പ്പിയാണ് നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചതെന്ന് ചരിത്രം പറയുന്നു. ഭൂമിയില്‍ കാലുറപ്പിച്ച്, ശരീരത്തില്‍ തൊടാതെ കൈകള്‍ താഴ്ത്തിയിട്ട് മുഖത്ത് പുഞ്ചിരിയോടെ നില്‍ക്കുന്ന രീതിയിലാണ് ഈ ശില്പം തീര്‍ത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. ബാഹുബലി എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ഗോമതേശ്വര പ്രതിമ പൂര്‍ണനഗ്‌നനാണ്. 57 അടി (18 മീറ്റര്‍) നീളമുള്ള ഇതാണ് ഏഷ്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഒറ്റക്കല്‍ പ്രതിമ. കായോത്സര്‍ഗ എന്ന ഉപാന്ത്യഘട്ടമായി (അതായത് ശരീരം വെടിയുന്നതിനു മുമ്പുള്ള അവസ്ഥയായി) ജൈനര്‍ ഈ നില്‍പ്പിനെ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. എ.ഡി. 981ല്‍ ഗോമതേശ്വര പ്രതിമ നിര്‍മിച്ചതെന്ന് അതിന്റെ ചുവട്ടില്‍ ദേവനാഗരി ലിപിയില്‍ പ്രാകൃതത്തിലെഴുതിയവിവരണത്തില്‍ വ്യക്തമാകുന്നു. ബാഹുബലിയാണ് ജൈനരുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ മോക്ഷഗാമിയായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.
